Edgar tripped and fell

Yeah, that sounds rather silly. But my clumsy dog decided he was going to dash across the road (after something glorious) and fell on his face. We didn't know that until later though. I went and got him and put him in the house and finished up what I was doing. When I went back into the house I saw that he had blood on two spots of his leg. No big deal right.

The next day I'm looking at Edgar and say "Lee when did Edgar loose the color under his nose on his upper lip?" That brings me to to looking up an old picture to make sure Edgar always had the color. He did. Then I start looking at that old post of Darcy's about Panda's pigment loss. A little later Lee is looking at Edgar's pink spot and tells me that it is raw skin as a layer is gone. Sigh. So not only did the klutz put holes in his leg he took a face dive too.

The annoying part about this is that Edgar has decided that it would be fun to lick himself to death. He won't stop worrying one spot on his leg. We got some flex wrap and sterile pads to use on him. So how would I clean the wound before we wrap it up? Lee suggested hydrogen peroxide. And will the raw spot heal under his nose? I have to think that is a bad place to have something heal with all the licking that goes on with a dog.

Many people use hydrogen peroxide on wounds, BUT, as a veteran of NUMEROUS wounds myself (ulcers and assorted foot issues due to diabetic problems), my favorite Foot Dr. has told me that (at least in humans) Peroxide will actually kill off new cells forming in the wound. I am not a Vet, so I'm not sure if a dogs tissue would respond the same way, but be very cautious. My Dr. ALWAYS uses Neosporin and the healing is really exceptional. Best advice I could give would be to call your Vet. Good luck.
Aw poor Edgar! Walter tripped and fell on his face when he was 2 and chipped his front teeth... such klutzes!
sheepies are so clumsy! Summer is always bumping into my legs, even when her top knot is tied up! Hope he is ok x
Hydrogen peroxide and water, equal parts, is considered safe to clean wounds. Full strength hydorgen peroxide, as mentioned above, is old school and no longer considered appropriate as it kills the top layer of cells and slows granulation (healing).
It is fine to use on skin that appears unbroken as the top layer of our skin is made up of dead cells.

Good luck on the bandage - mine manage to take them off very quickly.
For some reason, Bear is always beating up his nose, too. He's had it nicked by Clyde's tooth while playing, scratched by Owen as a puppy and he ran into a fence and split it. He also had it raw in the same spot as Edgar and I thought the same thing-- with all that licking, how will it heal? But, it did. In an area like that, I just cleaned it of with a mild soap and water and watched it to make sure it wasn't getting weird. I may have put a little vaseline on it. Like I said, though, he healed fine. :)
poor edgar! at least its only a scrape...he will look handsome as ever, soon enough...

my girlfriend who is an e.r. doc, says never, ever to use peroxide on any cut..you or your animal....it kills all bacteria...which isnt good...use alcohol instead, that kills the bad stuff but not the good....

it stings a lot more, but works correctly.....
Thanks for all the responses! I wrapped it last night and ended up just rubbing some Neosporin on a sterile pad before putting it over his wound. So far he has pretty much left the wrap alone :crossed: . Tonight I will change out the pad and re-wrap it.

I didn't use Peroxide or alcohol. Lee was busy brewing beer and I would have needed someone to help hold Edgar down. Doing that by myself was sure to not go well. I will remember the suggestions for next time.

ButtersStotch does the color pigmentation come back after the nose heals all the way? I looked at his nose again this morning and it looks better. It's still very pink though. Who would have thought that his nose, that gets licked, heals faster then the small scrap on his leg that through his licking made bigger.
Bear's nose isn't quite black (it's more of a deep, deep brown) but in the scraped spots, it's just slightly lighter, but as time goes on, it seems to get darker. I have to study him to even notice any difference. It definitely still has pigment though.
Takes quite awhile for the pigment to come back. He'll be little pinkie for awhile.

I quit counting the number of times Jack has tried jumping onto the porch and caught a foot and slide on his chin or nose. He is not graceful.
Well ButtersStotch, I didn't quite believe you but Edgar's nose is completely black now. LOL
