I got me a monster on my hands

Langley I have christen monster. He is the opposite of Laika in every way. Except the head strong part he is giving her a run for the money. and fraying my nerves. I think he is way more bossy than she ever was or is. He is the man of the family. I am not a push over by any means I am very assertive with my dogs. but boys oh boys this little man pushes my buttons. I think he is at the stage where he wants to see how much he can get away with me and Laika.

We have finished puppy class and in level one. So he is going to obedience class. ah I just had to vent. Last night he was very naughty in class. Not listening and everything that moved he had to look at he has a huge amount of prey/herding instinct for sure! I had two little girls over and he chased and bit bums all weekend. ack! They were told not to run but they did it on purpose to get him going

I'd probably give you tons of advise and ways to curve this or that ..........IF my dog didn't sound a lot like yours, and I too am assertive and have been to enough puppy classes that you'd think things would be easier when having a pup.

I'm right there with ya sista! ;)

Thank God they're cute. Thank God they're cute. Thank God they're cute. /always repeating to myself
You have entered the Brain Dead Zone. This lasts for awhile. I suggest Scotch, Bourbon, or a really nice red wine. Well, at least this is shorter than it is with children........
ha! I never had (labour)kids but I imagine that this must be a little like this, because I must have totally forgotten Laika being like this. I forgotten the bad parts  But he does seem more of a nut.

He gets in these little moods and likes to bite me and when I give him a toy he spits it out and barks at me and continue bitting! That is my biggest issue that sticks out. I am covered in bruises he actually breaks the skin!

ack red wine that makes me cry!
Except for the biting bit, Tiggy only mouths and will spit out the toy in favour of chasing the cat   , it all sounds VERY familiar.
Tiggy's head is on a swivel! Even at obedience class she has to keep an eye on everyone and everything. Last week she wouldnt drop because there was a bird on the grass. It was a good 40 feet away but hey, she needed to stand and stare at it till it went. :?
If it helps she is slowly getting better. But she still has the most enormous prey/herding drive and chases everything that runs. I've nearly been taken off my feet lots of times. I feel like I'm in one of those cartoons where the dog runs and the person flaps along, horizontal at the end of the lead.

Mrs J you are sooo right........Thank dog they're cute :D
He is way too cute to be a monster! Are all sheepies bossy and stubborn? I use to think that Sammy was unique with her quirky behaviours. But now I see they are actually very common amongst all the sheepies here. Especially being bossy, stubborn and strong-willed. But also the most loving and affectionate and sweetest dogs in the world. :aww:
I think it is part of being a herding dog.
You have to be persistant, noisy and/or nippy to get those sheep to move the way you want. This is where the bossy comes in.
The more alert dog is better at watching for danger, we just see it as ADHD.
I am with ya as well.... I'm certainly not in a position to provide any advice with this one either - Mine's a monster as well..... But he is beautiful, big, bossy, stubborn, lovable, fun, boisterous and extremely fabulous to have around !!! :excited:
Goodbye baby puppy, HELLO and welcome to the bratty teenager

It gets better promise  They have to grow brains eventually!! :plead:
Ahhh puberty - I'm loving it !!!!!
Yep, yep been there we got through it...
you will survive!
What approach are you taking to correct it??
What does your trainer say?
It is a puppy thing BUT, as you know it has to be
stopped!
We had never had a puppy before Finn...he is deaf so,
yelping didn't effect him!
We would gently hold his muzzle and sign to him "no"
It worked I guess no more nips!
I guess the biggest thing to is to work on his focus...
Do you use the "look" or "watch me" technique??
Trust me I know I am talking about a puppy...focus is hard!

I promise you...it will pass....hang in there!
Yah I have living example that it will get better Laika is such a good girl.

I remember her having night spins around the room, poor Langley tries that at she stops him. I always say you did that you are going to take that fun from him tsk tsk! 8O
At least you have laika to help you out. We were just remembering how much of a nightmare Ru was, he would just bite bite bite no matter what you shoved in his mouth, no matter how many times we said (shouted) NO!!! I remember frequently leaving the room in tears. Putting him in the room next door would only make him bark for hours without a break. Nothing seemed to work... only time. And the barking in your face, then jumping up, oh my, those are the worst times.

Ru is still like that at training, he wants to chase all the other dogs all the time and he's almost 2!! I come home exhausted.
How can this cute little guy be a monster?

he looks as if butter wouldn't melt!
Ha! I say lucking you are so cute!! Laika is helpful but she also lets him bite her which doesn't help my cause... bla
he will grow out of it! you just need to be firm and not let that cute little bundle of loveliness and cuteness get away with it! good luck!
Ah the terrible puppy teens.... Fortunately Willy is not going through that phase. He is so laid back and good it's hard to believe, I keep wondering when he will start getting into trouble.
Bree (their mom) was mischievous until basically the last couple months LOL (she's going on 3) even now she has that look in her eye sometimes but she tries to listen, she really does

How is Langley's bite? Have all his adult teeth come in now?
Let's trade give me Willy  just joking i loves Langley. But he is more rambunctious that Laika was that is for sure. I have to say he might be the boss and not her! yikes!

Yes he has all is big boy teeth and uses them.
OMG they are so gorgeous and worth every bit of annoyance, right?
don't all shoot me but dreamer is a dream pup he never does anything wrong now my duffy he is a whole different story . guess we have to have one good boy and one that gives us gray hairs
Well I just can't believe that my darling partner has actually suggested we get another sheepie to keep Baxter company (he suffers sooooo much separation anxiety !) And I just can't believe that I will probably have to go through all of this...... again !!! 8O
glad to hear someone mentioning the barking in the face. It's soooooo rude. LOL  I had a friend over last night and chiquita barked right in her face on several occasions. Why? Because she wanted to go outside. I swear it's like she thought this ones new let me see how much I can get out of her. I had to keep apologizing to my house guest.

I love her but this teenhood is killing us.

How could you be sooooooooooooooo mean! This little darling could't possibly do anything wrong. In fact, I think he only dreams of chasing butterflies and snuggling up against you!!!!

That is one darn cute pup. Reprimands must be really difficult. How do you keep from laughing?!?

Soooooooooooooooooooo cute!
I'm new here - have been looking over all these posts. I initially came on here because our OES Murphy is doing some wonky things. He's 7 months old. He stops when we are out for walks - sits down on his hauches and refuses to move. He doesn't do this all the time and definitely does it more when it is just me taking him out - that I'll chalk up to me not being assertive enough. It becomes really hard when I try running with him and all of a sudden he slams on the brakes and my arm practically dislocates 8O He's also taken to trying to jump up on everyone he sees and his head is darting back and forth looking at stuff. Help!

I've read that stopping on walks is just a control issue. It sounds like your puppy is asserting itself and NOW more then ever you have to hold the line on what is acceptable and what isn't.

To get past the stopping and not moving on walks, we introduced another dog to her walks. The competiion did wonders. Or, either hubby or I would walk in front with treats. The one holding her told her once "let's go" and then she got a treat when she moved forward towards the other person.

My personal belief is that my puppy has learned most everything from her older dog friend. Dogs teach each other. Find a well-behaved walker and join them for a week or two. :D
well - you could be walking him too far as well.
Yes, Murphy will respond better with treats. A friend tried taking him for a jog yesterday and he was having none of it until the treats came out and then they were best buds :D

But this brings me to another question - how much exercise does your average OES need a day? Murphy gets a 3km walk in the morning, a 1km walk in the afternoon, play and race around time in the backyard with our girls, and a 2km walk in the evening. He's still got boundless energy after all of this.
