Got in Trouble from the Groomer

So this morning Quercus went to the groomer to either get shaved or brushed out. I had put his hair up so he could see and as soon as I went in the lady said that sheep dogs need to have the hair over their eyes. I was a bit taken back and explained well he runs into things and she said no they need the hair over their eyes because the sun will destroy the eyes. She also said it may look cute but it is harming your dog.
Is this true? Do sheepies need the hair over their eyes to protect their eyes? Should I maybe leave a small fringe or bangs and put the rest up?
I was so taken back by the tone she used when she was telling me this that I almost said some choice words and left to take my buisness elsewhere. Like sure maybe it's true but let me know in a polite way without making your customers feel like bad puppy parent!

OMG I'm so embarrassed that this was a groomer in Ontario!!!
Go to a new groomer, she sounds like a quack.
Where are you located? You can pm it if you want.
the need to have the hair shade their eyes as a protection against future eye damage (cataracts) has been a long helf belief and infact when I got my first OES in the 90's a vet actually told me that (a young newly trained vet). I believe it is no longer adhered to, but i also don't know if there are any scientific studies to debunk it. Of course with the more popular reading of the word profuse in the standard, very few show line dogs can actually see with a full fall.

I keep a fringe over my boy's eyes (he is in a puppy cut) and I do pull Miss Marley's up - but she always ends up with some hair in her eyes any way.
So not true.
They can have their hair any way you want. :D
Find a new groomer - geez.....
Thanks for all the responses! I think after the experience this morning I am going to try and groom myself.
Why would Old English eyes be different from other dogs' eyes?  Does the rest of dogdom need to wear shades to protect their eyes?

Of course they need their hair either tied up, thinned out or chopped off.

Now, if they don't have good pigmentation around their eyes, a common problem in the US, showlines and others alike, then their pink skin is more subject to sunburn, yes. (the same is true if they were just buzzed really short, the pink skin under their whites is especially vulnerable) So you don't leave them out in the sun to bake. Maybe that's where this peculiar belief originated and the true reason got lost in the shuffle?

It's really amazing how long these old wives tales can hold on. But even among professionals?? Wow.

One of Belle's first agility trials was held in a public park so we had more casual spectators than your normally see. One woman walked up to me as we were waiting to go in the ring, told me she had an OES way back when and did I know I was blinding my dog by tieing her hair up. I laughed. I mean, not only is it not true, imagine running a dog who can't see through her hair in agility. OUCH!

She stomped off in a huff. I was kind of taken aback by how angry she became at having her beliefs challenged, but, really, common sense should have told her this is nonsense.

Goes along the lines of so many people who think shaving them down is cruel. Why on earth would they think that? Is getting a hair cut cruel? Is it cruel for my husband to shave his head bald? Insanity.

Good question - we know people should always have eye protection against those nasty sun rays - what about dogs?

Of course they need their hair either tied up, thinned out or chopped off.

only if they don't like walking into cars in the garage

Have you not met any people who have this attitude and hold similarly unsubstantiated beliefs? - wow

I think you should print this thread out and mail it to her.
She doesn't seem to know enough to groom OES - let
alone to speak to you that way and make you feel dumb.
Shame on her!
The above posts were made by experienced people who
certainly know better than her. If for no other reason, please
tell her so she doesn't do what she did to you again.

When we registered Emma and Darby with the AKC in 2004, there was a page from OESCA included with the registration.

6. Please keep the hair out of your pup's eyes. Many Old English
Sheepdogs have lost an eye by running into sticks or household objects.
Keeping the hair cut in a visor above the eyes or wearing a topknot
allows your dog to see his world and enjoy it safely.

Maybe one of the OESCA members knows where this info is on the website so it can be printed and shared with the groomer?
If you can't locate it, I can send you a PDF file of the page I received back in 2004.
^^

I would definitely shove something like that in their face ...highlighted and walk out. I'd hate to lose a groomer that was good just b/c she was misinformed but the second they treat me like crap with a condescending tone... I'm out of there!
Like Kristine said why would sheep dogs have different eyes to other dogs??
I think Tiggy would do far more damage to her eyes, head, neck and self in general by running into things.
DH took her to the park once without a top knot and she ran into a park bench. I was NOT happy when he told me.
We got our first sheepdog in 1979. Although my husband had grown up with various dogs, he was my first ever dog. He was a totally new experience to both of us but was the total love of my life.

When we took him to the vet for the first time, I asked him about keeping the hair over their eyes for protection, that I understood they could see thru it all. He smirked a bit, looked at me and said, "Could YOU see if you had that much hair over your eyes?" Case closed! From that day on, Buford had his hair tied up, and Drez had and Sammie has their's cut.
