Dog Show Observer

There was the River City Cluster of Dog Shows this weekend here in San Antonio, along with a Cesar Millan lecture. Only 2 Sheepies were entered, one from Texas and one from Colorado, but what seemed like 100's of Golden Retrievers, Labs, and Norwich Terriers. I did talk with one of the OES owners, and she said there is a show in Houston next weekend that will have more Sheepie entries. Is this common in other regions?

Thanks to you all here I felt a little more knowledgeable about what was going on. Although, I did find myself paying close attention to the handler's shoes

  Yeah, the whole showing is pretty short so if you are distracted, you miss it..
The entries usually aren't very large at most shows anymore. A lot of things contribute to that. The economy right now is making people be very selective of the shows they enter. Although gas prices are down right now other expenses have skyrocketed. I know my local all breed club's entry is down 50% over say 8 years ago. Add to that, our breed is not the easiest to groom properly & show & you see why we are not getting the entries. A lot of the people showing our breed have been doing so for years. Every now & then someone new & younger joins the crowd. So yes, I would say this is common around the country. Every now & then you will see a larger entry at a specialty show or shows that follow specialties on the weekend. Also maybe more when there are several days of shows in one location.

We may actually go to the one next weekend esp since it says you can bring your dog! We're not sure though since we already have tickets to the circus (and i'm upset b/c i wanted to go see dora live! which was this weekend  and it's my husband who changed the plan and ruined our availability). I'm afraid we won't see much on the day we can go (sun). Last time we went to one here, there were ~6-8 oes' (all of them may have been tojo line although there is usually a guy from the lambluv line also there). The winner of westminster last year will also be there. I really wanted to go for the breed specific grooming seminars (even though I don't expect one of the many breeds will be an OES, there will be plenty of learning).

If you can, find out the ring times for the OES & plan to be there earlier to watch them groom & then after judging to talk to any of the breeders and/or handlers if you have questions. I know when we go to shows we usually hang around awhile after judging to work on each other's dogs & brush out the dogs we showed that day. But alot of people don't. They head out home as soon as the judging is done. Then alot of spectators who plan on coming in the afternoon (because it says the show hours will be say 8AM-5PM, as an example) don't get to see the breeds they are interested in or any number of the breed they are interested in.
The entry for Houston is a great entry. 0-7-8-1
too bad someone didn't have a class dog to enter!

I think you are incorrect however mrs. j, the Johnsons are not going to be in Houston. We pretty much know who all is going to be there entered.
All have been accounted for.
what did I miss? I don't see any mention of the Johnsons until ALi mentioned them - and are you sure Jere is bringing Winston to TX?
aghhhhhh that is the brain after 2 weeks of packing and what ever else.
but still no Johnsons won't be there, and from who all has said they are coming it is either Jere or Elaine Saxon.........

EITHER WAY what a great entry of Specials! And it isn't a OES club etc.

The last time i went to Reliant Shows was back in the late 70's or early 80's??? EEEK! when it was still the old Astro Dome.
A hurricane was coming and they rounded up all the motor homes inside the building for the night............ quite interesting to say the least!

I think we have pretty much figured out ring times will be Friday around 2:45 pm, Sat and Sunday around 1 pm to 1 30 pm.

yeah, I never suggested they were coming.  I did email him several weeks ago though just in case he (or family) was...

Thanks for posting what time they will be in the ring! That was helpful. The circus on sat is actually AT the Reliant ...I think that's what my ticket says... so it would be so convenient to go to both the same day, but unfortunately, I don't want the kids to be worn out so we'd probably go sunday instead.
Any other times of when you guys may be grooming or anything would be great in case we do have time to pop in!! :)

edit: Okay, I'm trying to convince my husband although I'm not sure I can. Reliant isn't exactly next door to us, so going 2 days in a row may be a challenge. Our circus which IS at Reliant is at 11:30, and we're going to the pre-show an hour ahead. The kids will be in the perfect too tired state and would fall asleep in the double stroller if we stopped by the animal show afterwards, but I think you guys will just be finishing (assuming our show is an hour and a half). So............ Sunday would be our best bet. :/

cynmcreid, are you going? :)
No, can't get to Houston this weekend. Will be going to the coast, but will be in Houston for George Strait in a few weekends :D

The owner I spoke with last weekend will have her dog, Whiskey, entered. He's a 2 year old and gives great Sheepie kisses  Hope he does well.
 ..well if you don't have a date, my husband says he wants to go with you.

Not sure if Ali is still reading this esp. since she has so much traveling, but sadly ...it's suppose to rain thurs - sun in Houston. Hopefully it doesn't although we reaaaaaaaaaaalllly need it, but that can't be good for some dogs as I see so many people grooming in their campers.
