Frontline alternative

This isn't about our soon-to-be sheepie, but rather our current 1-year-old shar pei. Since the beginning of spring, she'd been itching and scratching to the point she was losing hair - we took her to the vet who said it was probably seasonal allergies and gave her antibiotics and steroids. It improved with that, but not a ton, so we took her back in and they thought maybe it was a food allergy (she had not been eating anything different to usual-and we feed Blue Buffalo). They were trying to avoid doing an allergy test for her, but without it obviously aren't 100% sure what it is she's 'allergic' to that's causing the itching. They could see an infection under her skin which they said was normal with allergies of some sort, and it had improved a little since the first time she'd been in. They gave us another kind of steroid to give her, and it seemed to help - until a week ago when we did her monthly application of Frontline Flea & Tick. Now she's itching and losing hair again.

We'd asked her vet if it could be that (since we start the Frontline back up in spring and don't use it through winter) and she said she'd 'never heard of Frontline causing any issues' and dismissed it - but maybe she's just sensitive to it? At this rate, with the amount of $100 vet visits for 'some kind of allergy' I'm ready to do the testing, but before we do that I get the feeling it could be the frontline (if not, it's an interesting coincidence).

TL;DR version: Do you guys know of any herbal/natural or gentler flea/tick prevention?

all i can tell you is this.
We took a puppy from a breeder that was very ill with a bad heart.
She could have no chems on her.
The breeder bought and gave me garcil pills.
They did work!
all summer nothing.
she passed at 7 1/2 months but she will be in my heart forever.
First of all, did your vet do skin scrapings and or biopsies to test for a fungal infection or parasites (mange caused by mites etc)?

The vet dismissing the possiblity that it was a reaction to Frontline would annoy me, lots of dogs have had reactions to just about every med out there but from what I understand Frontline has had more than it's share of documented reactions.
OES Mommy - I looked up Garcil but couldn't come up with anything - do you have a link to what it is?

Willow - I am kind of not happy about the vet just dismissing it, but I wasn't there when my husband took her in. I think she took it as he was suggesting an allergic reaction, which yes - probably not common - but just a sensitivity in general to the chemicals surely is not rare. We are going to give her an oatmeal bath and see if it helps, if not we'll take her in and ask them to do the scrapings - if they still don't think they need to be done, we may switch vets (we just moved so the vet in our new town will be closer - no idea what they're like though). For how much they charge, they haven't been really great lately. They have been so awesome up until this point even when she had Entropion, so bah.

I used the Fleabusters powder on the carpet in the shop... it was a pain to apply but it lasts a year.

Does anyone have experience with Diatomaceous Earth?
I didn't find it effective (DE).
