Cushing's Disease

My Maggie, who is 9 1/2 has been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease. The tests indicate that the condition is being caused by a growth on her pituitary gland and is currently being treated with medication for a week. If the tests are good on Monday, she will go on a maintainance dose of the medication.

Has anyone had this condition with their OES?
Thanks

I've had no experience with it, but I wish you the best! :)
I am sorry to hear the news. Is this something that is typically tested for?? I have not run across it in reviewing OES information.
Funny I should come across this post again, I still don't know much about cushing's but I do know it is the opposite of Addisons' and you may be better to do a search on addisons' to find info on both.
I haven't had any experience with it with my guys, but when I worked for a Vet, we saw a few different breeds with Cushing symptoms. One was a 'new client' to the hospital and had all the symptoms, but it turned out that he had been on predisone. Apparently the predisone (or other steroids) produce the thirst, the skin problems, overeating, panting etc, symptoms. These I AM familiar with as I had an OES on predisone. The other dog actually had Cushings and I THINK it was prescribed Anapryl?? At any rate, it did quite well on the medication.
Best wishes!
Cathy
Our Mr. Winston had Cushings, which our vet suspected when he noticed a symetrical thinning of his hair on both sides of his body. We are fortunate to live close to Purdue University, where a lot of veterinary research is done. The test results came back positive for Cushings and our vet put him on the same meds that are prescribed for humans. This was almost ten years ago, so I've forgotten the name of the medication. I can find out if you want, but something new has probably come out since then.

I believe Winston was about six or seven when we learned of his condition. Other than being a shaggy guy with somewhat thin hair he lived a long and full life, just three months short of his 14th birthday. Having a super vet, loving parents and rather expensive medication didn't hurt!)

We wish you all the best, let us know how Maggie is doing (I have a Maggie now, too, and she sends her warmest regards!)
My husband just dug through the vet records from 1990; the Cushings meds Winston was on was "Lysodren 100 mg."
Here are 2 sites with info:

www.2ndchance.info

I have never had a dog with Cushings but good luck and I hope the meds help.
Thank you everyone for your input. I've checked out some of the websites suggested and found them helpful.

Maggie is doing much better. She has stopped drinking as much water, isn't eating everything in sight (and losing a bit of weight) and seems to be more playful.

She is on Lysodren (same as Winston) only 500mg. It had been given twice a day for 7 days and is now on 3 days a week, once a day. She will go back to the vet in a week to have some tests run and to change the doseage if necessary but so far, so good. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
Glad it looks like you've found a workable solution to Maggie's situation.
We're crossing our fingers (and toes of all four feet) for you. Sounds like your vet is great and you are persistent; that's what it takes. Once we got Winston's meds regulated you would never have known he had Cushings. His hair was still a bit thinner than it should have been but it didn't slow him down a bit. Hang in there and let us know how she progresses on the Lysodren.
Glad to hear Maggie is getting better with treatment. My Wimsey has not been diagnosed yet. Still in testing stage, but first blood test showed extremely high enzime level and ultrasound showed a small mass on the adrenal gland. Going for another blood test tomorrow. I think the vet is leaning towards Cushings Disease so far. Strange thing is, he has absolutely no symtoms of it. We were going to have surgery to have some fatty tissues removed and his teeth cleaned but he "flunked" the initial blood test, now we are on the 3rd test and a about $800.00 later and still looking at possible surgery to remove the mass on the adrenal gland. I'm really confused about this since no symtoms are present and I've read that sometimes, they never appear, but then other times can be fatal. Wimsey is 11 years old but so far seems to be really healthy.
Wimsey's mom,

See my post in the "Sick or not" vein.
Sorry to hear of Maggie's diagnosis. I had a 9 year old guy, his name was Bart, that was showing alot of the signs of Cushing but it was never diagnosed. All the vets and tests just couldn't determine what it was. So I am glad that your Maggie has treatment and hopes she responds well! It certainly seems to be the hardest thing to find out what they have in the first place, I wish they could just tell us!
