A Needle in a Haystack/ Searching for lost dog

The posting on Craigs List was enough to make any dog owner cringe.
A white dog wearing a muzzle and dragging a black leash was hit by a car. Last seen running towards a wooded ravine possibly has broken leg or pelvis. Skittish and scared - ran away from would be rescuers the following day.

I read the post at 11pm with a heavy heart and thought I would help in the search the following day after work. It was with dismay I looked at the steep edge where I parked my car. I spent over 2 hours searching but to no avail.

The next day I came better prepared, rubber boots for the creek, backpack, and Snoop. I had to think about who I would bring as one home owner said he would allow me to travel to the bottom of the ravine via his property - It was trecherous, full of log jams, heavy brush - full of stinging nettles and poison ivy. Merlin and Panda would not be suitable so my decision was made as to who to bring - Snoop

At first the creek at the bottom of the ravine appeared peaceful and easily passable.

However, it soon became clear that there were numerous obstacles - like these log jams which I either had to climb over or under.

Sometimes one slip meant falling in deeper parts of the stream. Unbelievably Snoop was able to leap from one log to the other OVER the stream! I waded through water waist deep several times while Snoop appeared to fly overhead.

Sometimes it was impossible to pass the sides of the stream due to heavy vegetation , I managed the giant skunk cabbages but the worse were the berry bushes which were so thick we crawled.Image

We spent a lot of time walking the creek in hopes the poor dog would head towards the water. It was thoughts of him/her in his muzzle that pushed us forward.Image

Snoop and I walked across slippery logs across the creek.

Sadly, we came up empty handed as did the others who were searching on the top portion of the ravine. I pray this poor dog somehow found a kind soul who came to his/her aid. At least we tried but I am feeling so sad this evening as I wish we could have found the dog.

Oh how sad. How kind of you to spend two days searching for the poor dog. Although the terrain looks very treacherous it is also beautiful. Please post if there is news.
What an angel you are to put yourself through such terrain to help an unknown dog  I wish there were more people like you in this world.

:crossed: for some good news soon
You are such a good person I hope the poor dog is soon found :ghug:
Beuatiful scenery, but how frightening for the dog. I would have to believe it's lead handle got hooked on something in terrain like that. :(
Snoop looks really concerned in that last pic. Let us know if anyone finds that poor dog.
Oh Marianne you never sieze to amaze me  You and Snoop are so wonderful to look for that poor dog. I hope they find him soon
Please give Snoop doggie dog a big hug for me for helping you:lol:
I was really hoping for a Marianne Miracle. That is so sad. Thank you and Snoop for trying.
Thanks everyone for your nice comments and while not looking for accolades at least I know we really did try to do "something". The fate of the dog is unknown as other CL posters have visited the SPCA to see if the dog was found by others. We don't know if perhaps the pooch returned home to oblivious owners who may not know that people were searching for the dog.

The only good thing was the ability to see firsthand Snoops amazing agility abilities which I hadn't seen before, nor had the opportunity. Panda, as wonderful as he is would have been unable to even manage the first log jam due to hip dysplasia and Merlin boy...well..sometimes he has the heart of a chicken although blessed with good looks and an endearing personality. :D

I always have all three with me and except for obedience training I am never alone with Snoop. I mentioned in my post - I was amazed at his "flying abilities" as it was pouring rain (hard to tell in the pics) and those logs were slippery but he would leap from log to log sometimes 5-6 ft apart over my head while at times I waded in the water up to my waist. He always bounded up over the logs that sometimes were piled 20 feet or more in height. Stupid me, at one point I mis-stepped and found myself hanging upside down with my head inches from the creek while one foot was stuck in something squishy. I wasn't afraid of falling in the creek as I was soaked, but my lifeline (cell phone ) was in my backpack. Snoop gave me a nice face wash while I used stomach muscles I never knew existed to pull myself uprightImageht.

I think he did look concerned and somehow sensed we had a job to do. He even led me to some bones but didn't touch them...coyote or dog - not sure what they were, but not the one we we looking for as those happened some time ago.

Even the coyote shooting sheep farmer gave him a pat saying I had a good boy. (He had an Australian shephard in the house) and a huge fondness for sheepies. Yup, good thing I didn't bring Merlin or he would have changed his mind when Merlin would feel it was his job to round up his sheep... :?
How sad.

Marianne, you are a wonder. I am always in awe of your desire to help anyone, anything, at any time. :ghug:
