eating non-food stuff

We got our now 1 1/2 year old male OES from the Shelter last spring. We're very blessed/lucky to still have him as he has literally eaten numerous socks, underwear, even a winter headband. He has either thrown them up or popped 'em out.

A friend suggested he needs more food, so we've made sure there is always food in his bowl. He has plenty of toys, chew hooves, etc. For his own safety, I've had to gate him off of the upstairs as he can nose up the lid on the laundry basket and my boys aren't good at getting socks into the basket anyway. He also has been caught trying to eat small stuffed animals! I thought this would limit his opportunities to get stuff, but I still found two socks in the stool in the kennel the other day...I have no idea how he got them.

I've had dogs chew on clothing or stuffed anmals before, but never actually swallow them! I also feel badly about confining him to a smaller part of the house, meaning he can't sit with the kids when they watch t.v. or something...It's hard on him, but I don't want to lose him to a bowel obstruction.

Anybody have the same problem? Any ideas?

Thanks!

I feel you pain... Sofa eats everything that may look yummy. The only solution for us was to keep dangerous items away from her and a constant eye on what she's got on her mouth. I've caught her eating the stuffing on her toys, a roll of toilet paper, a plastic bottle, the whole contents of the garbage can, bills, checks, the broom... 8O

Just don't isolate your doggie too much, OES are very social animals and isolating him too much from the family coud cause anxiety problems.
Kiera is very fond of my socks and nylon knee hi's. She is also a garbage can raider and will eat anything she can get. We feed her, but she has this need to eat all the time. She is also an adopted dog and her history is for the most part unknown to me. I feel for you, as I suffer from the same stuff and more. Some of her extra eating can not be mentioned here.

We try to pick up everything from the floor and I use a lingere bag for my stockings and such and hang it from the top of a door so she can't reach it. But it doesn't stop all of her "snacking".
My girls both do this as well, but mostly Sky. Sky has pooped out a whole sock, intact, just a different color
She has also eaten peices of small stuffed animals. I haven't bought any new stuffies in a while, I'm hoping she will over this phase? LOL
I also feel your pain. We have a 14 month old OES named Mr. Mop and he will swallow anything whole! He loves socks and he usually throws them up also. We have a baby gate up that only allows him to be in the front half of our house (out of the bedrooms). This has helped alot, but he still seems to sneak one from the laundry room every now and then. It's nice to hear that other families have these same problems.
