I really need advice

Hi Everyone.

As you know, I brought Harley home last night. He was totally fine in the car the whole way home. This morning around 5 am, he threw up. It was mostly water with a few peice of un-chewed food. Well, He threw up on the way to petsmart today. It was thick and looked liked mashed up dog food. Now, about a half hour ago, he drank water and proceeded to throw up about 5 minutes after. He didn't drink too much. I am getting worried. Any Advice? We are giving him the same food that he had growing up. He hasn't over eaten either. I would really appreciate some advice here. Thanks so much!

Btw-His bm's are totally normal. He had two today and one last night.

Better safe than sorry...it may be just stress and unfamiliar food/situation...but Id see my vet! A check up for a brand-new pup is a good idea anyway...
could he just be slightly stressed with the changes or is it too warm where he is? Our dog gets really sick tummy if it's too warm in the house or if she is out in the heat too long. But then, he'd have bad poo too.

Hope he feels better xx
Our house is air-conditioned and it feels comfortable. I am sure he is stressed out, he is in a totally different enviornment than he is used to. It is very warm outside today, so I have been keeping him in the shade when we are outside. And making sure he has all the water he needs. I think I will call the Vet to be safe.
This is a very familiar stress reaction from a newly re-homed puppy. Last night your were a big adventure for Harley and it was all a big game, hence his behaviour and healthy digestive system. Today however Harley's big game is over and he doesn't know what to make of his changed world. Keep a close eye on him so he doesn't de-hydrate and if he can't keep his food and drink down by late evening you will definetely need a vet's help to settle his stomach tomorrow if not sooner.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but be prepared for the loose "bm" to strike shortly as well. Loose stool is another classic symptom of re-homing stress and if not quickly brought under control that can severely de-hydrate a young puppy. Pedialite (one of the neutral flavours) is a good remedy for de-hydration if you can get Harley to drink it - often they won't accept the taste but it is worth a try.

Another factor that can be at play here is the change in drinking water. While that usually manifests itself in loose stools it could be upsetting Harley's stomach if there is a significant chlorine content or if you are on well water that doesn't have an ozonator to kill bacteria that may get through the filters. Is there is a high iron content, is it hard water, etc., ..... It will take time for Harley to make these adjustments and completley resettle his digestive tract. It may also be an idea to buy some bottled water (no fizz or other additives) and start him on that and then slowly blend in your tap water over a week or so. At the very least use filtered water if there is any question of the water quality being associated with his stomach upset. Be patient and help him - upset stomachs can be frustrating but they are part of "the contract" and he'll repay your current "pain" quickly many many times over!!

If you don't have an improvement in Harley keeping his water down by bed time today I'd say an emerg vet visit would be in order and if his stool becomes loose and stays loose for more than 48hrs that is also call for a vet visit. It is better to have an un-necessary vet visit than miss one that is needed.

Hope Harley perks up quickly and you and your family get some good bonding time with him.

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
Good idea. You want to get him in to your vet for a new baby checkup anyway. Bring in his shot records so they can start a file on him.

He may be drinking too much. It is a common stress relieving mechanism for dogs. If they drink too much, they throw up. If it goes on, the gut gets hypersensitive and just keeps contracting (vomiting).
I kept Paislee pretty quiet the first couple of days she was home. It is a big change to go from the farm to a new home. The advice above about going to the vet is a good idea.

You should call or e-mail Linda as well. She has been very hepful to me gettting Paislee settled. PM me if you need her number.

Give Harley a gentle pat from us. I hope he feels better soon.
Thanks again for the helpfull advice. I called and talked to a vet tech just now. Just to be safe I am bringing him in tomorrow morning. I am going to observe him today/tonight and if anything comes up (no pun intended :) ) I'll bring him into the emergency vet. I am sure is is stress/different water, etc... but I really want to be pro-active about his health care and well being. I did check for dehydration and he seems good in that area. I just want to be safe!
If water is still the issue......not staying down....try ice cubes in the water bowl.....they lick them and slowly take in water. Also if the other end explodes and water is staying down, you can put PediaCare baby stuff to your pup's water dish to help replace electrolytes lost in the diarrhea.

Just sit quietly with the pup, don't force them to come to you, just remain close and quiet. This is all new and very confusing, plus the ickkky tummy, pup is miserable. Assuming no organic reason for vomiting other than stress, all will be fine soon.
I'm guessing the food you are giving him is the same as
what he was getting before you picked him up. Seems
like common knowledge - but thought I'd mention it.
Since he get sick after the shock of a new place, and
again after a car ride today, maybe it's just too much too
soon. I'd lean towards stress, but a general check by your
vet is in order anyway, so mention it at the vet.
He may just need quiet and calm for a while to give him time
to adjust.
Congrats too!

Just an update:
Harley hasn't thrown up at all since early afternoon yesterday. I am so happy! I am still taking him in to the vet today for a check up. He is great.

Amy
