The wheels are in motion!

Hi! After years of waiting patiently (well, not too patiently  ) We are finally getting our little man! His name is Harley and he is from Show Me OES out of Missouri. He is 5 months old and such a beautiful boy. We are driving down on either Sunday or Monday of next week. I can't sleep at night because I am so excited! It's all I can think about these days.

Any advice for the car ride? What kind of kennel would do best? I drive a Saturn Vue, so there is some space. Please let me know what you think. I need all the advice I can get.

I CAN'T WAIT!

Congratulations!

As to type of kennel, up to you. I like the collapsible wire crates better as I can control light and ventilation with a towel over the top......or none at all, plus they collapse for easier use getting into the car.. You can use it indoors as well. Other people love the more solid Veri kennel.

When traveling don't forget the towels and vomit removing spray, water, dog water dish. Treats are OK but might be vomited back up by a motion sick dog. Sturdy leash and collar are a must, I often double collar for back up protection.

Frequent stops for peeing or vomiting. Hope it is a short trip.
Welcome and don't forget to post some pics of Harley!!!! :D :D :D

and........Congrats!!!!!!
When we picked up Bailee, my wife sat in theback seat with Bailee in a cardboard box with lots of towels and a small playtoy. He managed to sneak his way into her arms and lap for most of the 3+ hour ride. Stopped about 4 or 5 times along the way. We kept the box for a while just to compare his growth from when we picked him up. Didn't take too long until the box was way too small. These guys will grow pretty fast. Good luck with your new buddy.
Since you don't need to fly your sheepdog, I like the Bargain Hound plastic crates with plastic twist tab closure. It is easier to break down and wash than the airline approved ones with the screws.

Good luck. I am looking forward to pictures!
We've always brought Pups home in a cardboard box with old towels and on someones lap in the back of the car , that way they can be talked to and reassured easily .........every one of them ended up out of the box and asleep on just a lap with a towel though and only once did I end up with a wet knee !! :D

:cheer: :yay: :cheer: Congrats! I can't wait to hear more on your little one
Congrats Amy and family!!!!!

I can't wait to meet your new boy :D

As far as crate, get whatever one you think will be best for use at home. We have both the collapsible wire ones and the plastic ones - and I like them both.

Both have pros and cons. Did Linda give you any ideas? - maybe he has been in one type, or if he is a chewer in a crate - then maybe not the plastic (although they are incredibly tough). The plastic are easier to clean, but less portable. Chewie loves either kind, he just hates a rug or bed in them. He wants to lie on the bare bottom of the crate - even when we got him as a 4 month old.

For the drive home, I would plan on 2 stops. Take a walk each time, let him relax, potty and drink. It is good bonding time. :D He should do fine. Todd 's recall of our time walking Chewie around at night (it was dark) at a wayside rest was how much fun Chewie had pouncing on moths in the grass. :D :D
We had Simon with, and he pretty much followed his example - walking, peeing, all that.

Are you keeping the name Harley? I can't wait til you get him!!! Yay, another OES in MN!

Bring towels, spray (for just in case), maybe even cover the seat or back of the car with an old comforter or blanket. A water dish, collar/lead or a slip lead. Poop bags, paper towels.
Congrats! We brought a few blankies to get "comfy smells" on and to cover the seat of the car. We started with a wire crate and later bought a soft crate for ease of traveling - Bingley definitely prefers his wire crate. It is cooler for him and more stable. Have fun!
Great idea about the blanket for smells. Kristine did the same for us when we brought Chewie home. He had a blankie in his kennel there, and we brought it home with him. He carried it around for weeks - then I had to wash it!
He still loved it until he outgrew it. He used to carry it around and hide his toys under it - so funny :D
Thanks for all the great advice. I go to Petsmart and I'm like a kid in a candy store! There are so many different choices for everything. Linda said Harley uses a wire crate right now. She also said she will give his blankies to us. Only a few days left until our trip to Sheepieland! He's 5 months old right now, any advice on getting a 5 month old who is bigger and has a routine going already? Thanks.
