Who Twitters?

Any twitterers (twits?), tweeters or tweakers out there?

Nope, I'm already on TMI overload. Twitter is just inane chatter that takes up space.

I Plaxo for the prof's, and FB just to keep up with those near and far, email to those that are close, and a cell phone with voice and data is welded to my hip.

I can't see eating up more bandwidith and brain cell capcity with white noise.

IMHO. :sidestep:
Yep I do! The internet is the most amazing thing! I love Twitter because you get to keep up with everyone without all that Facebook or Myspace type of rubbish. I added the Twitterfox application to my Firefox so people's little updates pop up. Because they are only a few sentences it's not annoying at all and it's great to see what everyone is up to, even if it's just walking the dog or someone's washing has blown off the line. Reminds me we all do the same stuff no matter where we live. Might seem boring to some, but to me it's chicken soup for the soul. :D

Find my page and follow me from here
nope, I hear that it is trouble
Cassie, when you tweet with the "@" prefix, does it stay on your home page (is there a word for that?) and does it go onto their home page as well?

Is that the only way for a non-friend (non-followed/non-follower?) to send you a tweet? Do you get a popup if I send one of those?

Thanks!!!
I just can't keep up with all of this!!!!!!
^^

I just don't want to, and being the private person I am, ...I hate nosy people who always question what you wrote or are doing b/c then you get offended people "why didn't you answer the phone...I know you're home"

You can change the settings so you have to APPROVE people before they can follow you. That way you keep it to just your friends.

Yes the @ prefix tweets show up and stay on both yours and their pages. There is a PM function, but you can set that so even your tweet friends can't use it. I guess famous people do that.
All tweets including @ prefixes and PMs pop up on the twitterfox application, otherwise view them on your twitter home page but the pop ups are easier for me, because I can't be bothered to go to my homepage or look at other's profiles as it's just tweets on there.

I don't think a non friend (non follower) can tweet you at all. You cannot tweet anyone unless they have added you.

Oh, and you can tweet FROM the firefox thing, which means you don't need to visit the Twitter site at all really.
No tweeting here and facebook is going to hit the dirt also, only joined that one to see what it was like . I'm on enough with the best one ... OES... and another one made up of old ladies (where the jokes keep you laughing  )
Put me in the private and LOL (little old lady) group too. OES.org is as chatty as I care to be.

It's called your feed.
If you do the private setting, the @your name tweets don't show up on your homepage.
OK, I sent a tweet started with @Cassie's tweet username and it is on my feed page, but I don't see it on her feed page.

The ones *I* send or the ones sent to me? LOL

And now Cassie has made her feed page private, too. LOL
Ron - from your feed page, on the right, click on the link that says @yourusername. You will see any mentions of you - I just wrote one for you to see how that works.
Great, I see that... but it's not on my home page :( :( :(

I'm trying to work this thing into a nifty notification thingy for the forum.

Is "thingy" too technical? Should I go to "widget" instead? lol
No, you won't see it on your home page unless you follow me.

The only way you'll notify anybody from the forum is if they follow you. You notify your followers.

It's not too technical at all for those who use it. Just like any new application, you have to "get to know" it before you're fluent in it.
But people search keywords on Twitter like "Old English Sheepdog" so you might want to put that in your Bio.
Good points, good points. I have some interesting ideas, some of which I'll go into now. I'M LOOKING FOR, AND QUITE OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS!!!!!!
Here is what I'm planning at the moment:

1 channel (right term?) for people to follow who would like to be notified when there is a new post in the "DOGS IN TROUBLE" section. That section is for dogs who are in immediate danger, either in a high kill shelter, or in danger of being turned over to a pound by a distraught owner, or whatever.

I have written a small proof-of-concept prototype to do this, and when anyone posts a new thread in that forum, a tweet is immediately sent to the "oesorgDogDanger"
http://twitter.com/oesorgDogDanger
twitter account. The tweet gives the title of the post and a link to get to read it.

The next thing I want to do is to make a tweet on the "oesorg" account
http://twitter.com/oesorg
that will do the same thing, but for every new thread on the forum. Currently there are usually between 10 and 20 new threads per day.
In fact, here are the number of new topics per day this month:
Code:
Jun 14      11
Jun 13       7
Jun 12      13
Jun 11      11
Jun 10      18
Jun 09       9
Jun 08      13
Jun 07      10
Jun 06       3
Jun 05      10
Jun 04      12
Jun 03      20
Jun 02      11
Jun 01      16

Is that too many tweets for followers to receive per day? Should I break it down further into more twitter accounts?
Restrict it to certain forums?
Offer a configuration page so oes.org members can get tweets from only certain forums? (not a simple task for me)

I've also created a twitter account: "oesDogsInDanger"
http://twitter.com/oesDogsInDanger
although it is completely empty at the moment.
Does anyone think this is a better account name than oesorgDogDanger?

I have a few other ideas as well, but let's just start with this basic one.
If you've already followed "oesorg", for now you might want to also follow "oesorgDogDanger"
http://twitter.com/oesorgDogDanger

Also anyone can go there and see how I've got things set up, see the tweet on the page and click the link that brings you to the post.
didn't know there was an OES dog on twitter - how cool. I look forward to when we can get tweets on new topics in the performance sections :) I have some work related tweets go to my cell phone and it is very helpful

IMO it's not too many. Some people I follow have 30+/day. Some have 1/week if that.

Ron wrote:

I like that idea but don't think it's necessary.

Maybe just the public forums - keep Members Only out otherwise you're going to have to make sure that anybody who follows that forum is also a member, right? I guess if they click a link in that tweet and aren't a member it wouldn't matter anyway though.

If you do the second one above, people would just subscribe to the ones they want and you could avoid all that programming. You could have an announcement at the top of each forum telling people they can follow this forum at twitter/OESdogsindanger, etc.
i just signed up to see what it is all about under oesboys
I LOVE the idea of using it for dogs in trouble. I've always felt there could be more we could do, and for rescues not in 'trouble' too.

Is it too late to have the name oes.org? I feel oesorg is not really obvious unless you already know the forum.

The amount of tweets a day seems fine- but do you think people might get lazy and think "hmm that post title sounds boring so I won't read it" or "no point logging on because there are no interesting posts today"? That would be a shame because they would miss many of the discussions.
Most of the people I follow tweet maybe 4 or 5 times a day or less. However, more tweets would catch those online for a few minutes, and those who spend hours online a day probably won't mind anyway.

Can't think of anything else for now.. :D
What's the best twitter app for the iPhone?
I'm using TwitterFon which I think is a great app. I have heard TweetDeck for the iphone is really good - I like it for the desktop so I might check it out.

I use TweetDeck for the iphone too. I did not know about the other one.

I tweet! twitter.com/notisolde

I use Twitterfon; my husband just switched to TweetDeck and thinks it's way better.
