Looking for a Good Deal on Leather Leashes

I found this really nice site that sells braided leather leashes in great colors - turquoise, pink, red, etc. Problem is the leashes are about $50 and I am a tactile person, can't really tell about the quality until i feel them. Does anyone have a recommendation on a site to buy decent leather leashes at reasonable prices? Or do I need to find a decent show around here to shop at?

Ad Ron we need a shopping category

Go to shows. I'm the same way. But I'm not spending $50 on a leash no matter how great it is considering that Sybil apparently checks price tags and selects only the most expensive ones to eat

She hasn't done it in a while, but I almost cried when she ate Belle's 4' competition lead. A good leash is so hard to find... :( 8)

Seriously. Leather has got to feel right.

Some people swear by Kangaroo. Sybil too. Says they are mighty tasty, yum-yum.

well you know me - you may be helping me to pick one out in November in Syracuse - probably on my way into the ring :) And I'll have to have two cause the boys can't "wear" pink :D :D
When it comes to leather, best to hand pick it out at a dog show vendor. I have 2 - 6 foot leads. One I hand picked (it is extremely pliable) & another I ordered out of a catalog as an "extra, incase". The 2nd one isn't nearly as nice. I hardly ever use it. You also want to make sure you buy the correct length for use in the ring depending on what you are using it for....obedience or conformation. My brown , 6' leather is for obedience (novice), my brown leather "city lead" is for obedience (open) & my deep purple 24" leather is for when I wear my purple show clothes in conformation!

That 6' leash that you keep by the door in your kennel (that I walked Owen with last weekend) is the only leather lead that I've ever really liked using. Mine leather ones are all too thick and heavy.
I never buy a leather (or an material actually) lead that is more than 1/2 inch wide. Anything more than that is bulky and nasty. 8)
But I do have one exception, and it is the funky fabric lead tht I got from a vendor at the Twin Cities Pet Expo. It is 3/4" wide but soft and flexible and it my current lead of choice! I have the matching martingale collar as well. And I got the all fabric martingale made too - not the one with chain.
A shameless plug for the vendor: www.yankeecollars.com
Nice prices, good quality and she is great to work with.

I agree - buy from a vendor, or one that you have had a chance to hold onto that a friend has.... :D

Bingo.

I do have a couple of old probably one inchers I've inherited from people for every day use. They have that nice worn feel. The oil from your hands will render most leather leashes usable eventually if you don't get fed up and burn them first. Or you can hit up a saddlery and find some nice tack oil and condition it yourself.

Better still to just get a nice one from a vendor. You can get very comfortable ones for easily under $20 and even under $15 if you go for the smaller width.

I refuse to go into an obedience or rally ring with anything other than a leather lead, though. Perferably black since it matches a gray & white dog best. Kerry, if you take Marley into the ring in PINK I may have to disown you, if she doesn't do it first. You cannot subject a serious dog to such a frivilous color! 8O

   And that is the one that is my 2nd preference! I keep my favorite one in the van! But you know it was probably the width that you liked. Both are the same width. And if I'd use it more, I'd probably break it in. You know, as Kristine says, "the oil from my hands".

I agree on the 1/2" for the leather for sure. I have small hands & need to have something I can fit into them when I need to gather up the lead. My fabric leads are 3/4" (webbed) just because that seems to be what is more standard. I use them for regular walks & trips to the vet. There too tho' you can get ones that are much more "pliable". My pink one actually belonged to my very first OES, Duchess. Bought it back in 1986!!!!!!! 8O It is so much more flexible than the others that I even use it to walk the boys. I think they are colorblind
I'd go with a Kangaroo lead too... just gorgeous and after some wear they feel really nice.
I am glad you posted this,Kerry. Laurie, my friend who just died, used to make her own leather leashes. She used the softest leather, and used only one piece ..no chance that it will break. She charged $25.00 for them and I have 2...a 6 ft. and a 4 ft. braided, that I bought for Millie, so I have had them for about 15 years or more, but to this day, they look new but are so buttery and soft..my biggest fear is that I will lose them..and then what would I do????? So I am thinking about trying to get one online too!!!!
A small company in Oregon makes really good leather leashes. http://www.leathernature.com/

They are already soft. The owner will make a custom leash too.

I don't understand why these people post on here pretending to be a customer. Why not say "I make custom leashes, here's my website?"
Why would someone search for custom leashes, find this page, then post a recommendation for a place they already knew about? Obviously they're finding pages to spam.

I have looked at the source of the post and the website's contact page and they are both from Eugene Oregon.

Would you do business with a company where the very first contact you had with them, this post, was deceitful? Does that give you the warm and woollies?
I have several leashes from LeatherNature and they are my favorites. I've never found a leather leash that is already broken in like the way they make theirs. The website is  http://www.leathernature.com/.
Yet another post from Eugene Oregon. Leather nature is a Spamming company. You like your spam emails? This is what that company does. I suggest that you stay away; beware companies that feel the need to be spammers!

Hi Ron,
I bought one of their leashes here in town. I had been looking around on forums including this one for advice and decided to make a post here to share what I found after I learned about them. It is unfortunate that my post was deemed as spam. I know that this company has a very loyal local following so I wouldn't be surprised to see more posts from Eugene if they're reading this forum. Thanks!!

And on a personal note, the condescending tone of your post reflects rather poorly on your ability to maintain an open and objective stance when monitoring this forum, and your quick assumption to criticize an innocent company indicates that you are not interested in finding out any facts before making an assertion which could potentially damage this small company. Why don't you call him on the phone and ask him about it? His number is 1-203-DOG-GEAR.
Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I've bought something then searched for it again on the internet to post reviews -- and then gone back again and again to read responses to them.

Yup yup! Happens all the time.

The stupid thing is we actually allow people to tell others about their relevant (to our community) products. An honest "Hey guys, here's my company and here are my beautiful hand made leashes" would have been welcomed.

You decided to take a different path.
