NOOO! Merlin Was Stapled!

Sniff...My poor Merlin...once again a trip to the vets. What is it with this boy? Funny enough, he takes after my youngest son whom was always needed stitches or trips to the hospital for mishaps. My oldest never once visited the hospital his entire time growing up.

I remember being in a Mom and Tots class with the youngest. The entire room was babyproof...not for my boy whom just happen to slip and gash his head on a corner of a wall. Sigh. Or the time he was 3 and slipped in the bathroom..again stiches..or when he was 5 and another child wacked him over the head playfully with a backpack and it just happened that the metal clasp split his head. (The other mother felt worse about this than me.)

Same thing for Merlin, okay some of it was my horror when I discovered that "thing" on his head (turned out to be a tick) which is very rare for my area. Next it was the time he was attacked by another dog at the dog park at 6 months and had a gash to his nose and pulled leg muscle as a result. Two days later a vicious dog charged us ( mine were on leashes and we had our back turned) only to hear someone scream and I braced myself for the impact. That dog only attacked Merlin..reinjuring his leg.

Then he got the lip infection from what the vet thought was food depris and a cut under the folds of his skin.

Now this!! Urg! Today I took Merlin for a quiet walk just him and I at a different dog park than the one I usually go to. Two dogs appeared and flanked him, growling, snarling and snapping. The owner appeared and seemed oblivious that her dogs were displaying aggressive behavior (dominant behavior is different.) Merlin had yelped and I called him over and then I drove home. Blue was waiting at the door to greet him.

He initiated play and Merlin yelped again which made me concerned and caused me to check further. There was a huge gash on his side - gasp!!
(Remember I just got him shaved down 3 days ago) so it was easy to see. I feel terrible I had missed it at the park.

Rushed him to the vet and apon examination he had quite a large gash which went down to his muscle. My poor boy!!! The gash was so large she decided not to sedate him to give him stitches, instead she would use staples so as not to trap any infection if it needed to ooze. Eeks sounds awful! Again I feel like such a bad mom for not seeing it until we arrived home. It wasn't bleeding but bloody but still I'm beating myself up over this.

In the meantime antibiotics for 10 days ...no rough housing..oh gawd..how am I going to survive trying to keep him seperate from Blue and Panda. Lots of love from me of course. We return in two weeks to get the staples removed.

The good news is I was able to speak with the vet in person, regarding Mama Kat's dental estimate and being honest that I had priced shopped and was wondering if they could somehow make a deal for me. The vet pointed to my file (which with so many animals, the file stands aprox 5 inches high - I kid you not! She said you're one of our best and most loyal customers ..of course we'll work it out for you. Hooray!!! So something good came out of it after all!

Merlin is only 15 months...I am going to age quickly with this boy I think. 8O 8O 8O 8O

I am so sorry to hear about the recent stormcloud over Merlin's head. But you just keep chasing them away.
aww poor merlin, give him extra hugs from mee
Poor Merlin!! And poor Mom, too! Does he have to wear one of those cone heads or can't he get to the staples?

Hugs to all, and remember - this, too, shall pass.

Chris

Awww... poor Merlin. Hopefully it will heal real fast. :(

I have a nephew like this Marianne (he takes after my brother!)

I'm glad Merlin is on the mend. YOu should get stock in hair dye - to cover the grays this boy is going to give you!

Maybe it was Merlin's way of helping with the Mama Kat. That's a good thing!

The problem is - you had to spend money on Merlin's visit! My sister seems to save money on one dog (through insurance) - only to spend it on another!

Good Luck with Merlin and the cat!

Kristen
Oh Marianne!!! I'm so sorry to hear about Merlin's injury! You poor thing! Big Hugs to both of you. I'm sure he'll heal fast and be back to his regular goofy sheepie self in no time!

Poor Merlin!
I've seen those slashes.....my guys get them by running thru bushes and getting hung up on incorrectly pruned stems, ahem (not done by me!) Yep, a few stables or stitches.......on smaller slashes not even that! Dogs are very resilient. Just keep the area clean....I'm sure the vet told you that.

As for file size......LOL, sounds like here. Our file was so thick, they had to purge them. You know it's bad when foster dogs are not listed by name, but by number. The vet just built a fancy new office next to her old......wonder which rooms we financed??
I'm so sorry to hear Merlin was injured! I'm glad he's ok though, and I'm sure with all the love and attention you'll lavish on him that he will heal up in no time!
 buys hair dye in case premature grey hair appears
 Rereads the poem called "When I grow Old I'll wear Purple.
 Purchases purple dress and red hat to join the Purple/red hat club. (You guys should really read this poem it's hilarious)
 Looks into how much botox cost as Merlin is also causing worry lines on my forhead.
 Buys good joke book to relieve stress

Merlin is "milking it for all it's worth", as the expression goes. He's never before curled up right beside me like a giant cat and laid his head on my stomach (that's now changed) and giving me those soulful eyes...like feel sorry for me and feed me burgers look.

Thanks again everyone for your well wishes.

I'm sorry to hear about Merlin. It's good you have such a good sense of humor to get you through such things. Hopefully his wound is in a spot where he can't chew at the staples. I wouldn't join the Red hat ladies just yet. My dogs were rough housing in the back yard and my Aussie cut her foot on a piece of glass right before we were ready to go to a Stevie Nicks concert. My husband had gotten me tickets for my birthday. We took her to the emergency vets. It had cut through a tendon. They gave her a sedative and stapled it. Luckily she had no problems with it. They put on a blue collar so she wouldn't chew the staples. We made it to Hershey in time to see the concert. I felt so bad but she was in good hands my oldest daughter and youngest took care of her. I called in the middle of the concert and she was fine. She looked like a drunken dog in a flower costume from the sedative and the morning glory blue collar they put on her.
Poor Merlin. I hope he's 100% soon! By your description, he reminds me of my two sons! LOL They have me old already at 25, and they're just 2 & 3!
How is Merlin feeling Marianne? It is amazing how fast dogs recover from things like this, so he should be back to his old self in no time.
