Trimming and shaping the body

I'm at the stage where Ru's coat is all scraggly because some of it has not been trimmed for a whole year now. As you have probably noticed I'm stubborn as an ox and am determined to learn for myself

So I need HELP please :plead:

I've shaped his butt OK, I'm fairly happy with making the angle (he's not being shown) and the fanning out. I'm also OK with shaping his feet, head and getting to grips with the chest.

But I'm clueless when it comes to his body and legs. I have good scissors and good thinning shears, but which way do I hold them? Vertically or horizontally?
Do I cut the main body hair in layers holding it UP from the body or AWAY from the body at an angle? Or leave the hair hanging and just cut?

Also the legs and neck, how do I trim those?

I've been looking at people's pics but really cannot tell from the finished look how to begin myself :?
