HELP! 5mo.old, Penelope, is getting rougher with our toddler

 PLEASE respond if you can offer advice regarding our sweet Penelope....5 month old OES. She is so affectionate, and has typical puppy behavior.

Our 21 month old daughter loves Penelope, and mostly they play well together.... particularly when Penelope is a little tired. However in the last few days Penelope will "charge" the baby, knock her down, and basically sit on her. We know this is OES inate behavior. Is there anyone with advice on how we can train her away from this behavior... what type of discipline is right for her if she manages to "get" the baby??

By the way, we have had OES for 2 months and she knows some basic commands. We are wild about her, and her puppy training will begin at PetSmart as soon as we find time. Until then our only concern is stopping this charging and knocking down habit.

Also she is "mouthing" a lot right now. She has lots of toys, but she is a nipper when we walk, and she wants to put her mouth (and teeth) on me when we play. THANKS.[/quote][/b]

Welcome to the board. As someone who has lo's in the house, and has 2 OES' ...one of which is presently a puppy...

I think time will be the biggest factor b/c "IF" your dog is like mine, I feel like I am doing the right things, but he's a puppy. I seriously saw a big change in behavior at TWO with our other OES and many others say the same thing on here.

I just continue to shake my head, roll my eyes, and instantly say " NO, BABYYYY <insert dog's name>" ...then remove the dog from him or show him the baby. He has slowly started to realize that when he's not careful around the baby, big momma will be a'coming behind him. This makes him careful around him.

I also had an infant when I had my first OES. I did the same thing and now if she ACCIDENTALLY runs into a kid, she feels absolutely horrible ...licks them to death, waits to see if they get up AND stays there until I say Good Girl. ;) My maltese did the exact same thing when the kids came, but she also listened more, so she was 10x easier to train ;)

At the same time I am there to correct ALL "bad moments" or accidents with the kid, I also train my kids over and over to not charge at the dogs, not jump, not run, and to keep their hands down!!! Many kids get scared and instantly put their hands UP so the dog doesn't mouth them, but it just makes the dogs think you're playing a game.

My personal opinion is the dog feels overwhelmed with your toddler and is finally figuring out how to stop her. I say this because it is exactly what my male OES puppy finally figured out would stop my female when they were little. She was much quicker and stronger and smarter - he ended up sitting on her when he got big enough.

Perhaps puppy needs some more time away from toddler and you need to look more closely at how they are playing because from the sound of it - from the dogs point of view - the toddler is being overwhelming.

You have already lost most of the best opportunity to train the puppy, by 14 weeks they become harder to train so I would say you need to start classes asap.

As for the mouthing - it will pass, keep giving her appropriate toys to mouth - and make it clear you aren't one of them :D
I just wanted to say welcome :D..... and good luck!
