What convertible has enough headroom? Recommendations please

I want a convertible... now! For this summer. I wanna ride with the top down.

We also need a new car for Joan, but we're trying to hold out for the Chevy Volt, another 18 months at least.

So I have a task: Find an older used convertible for $3,000 to $5,000 that I can fit into, or find a combination vehicle that can fit both purposes. I thought that might be the Pontiac G6 Convertible because it has a metal roof which we thought would make it possible for Joan to use as her primary sedan/coupe/whatever you want to call her business transportation.

But I have a headroom problem. I sit VERY tall. I have a long torso and shortish legs and I sit as tall as someone who is at least 6'6". Our 2000 Impala has 39.4" and is acceptable, the Pontiac G6 Convertible has 38.4" and when I went to the dealership to check it out, my hair is touching the roof all the time (annoying) and leaves no room to avoid hitting my head on the smallest of bumps in the road.

So two recommendations please!

A used convertible (or removable hard to, I guess), $3,000 to $5,000 give or take for me. Can be 10 years old or so...

or

A convertible or removable hard-top newish with a minimum of 39" headroom.

I'm also willing to listen to other ideas!!!

Help!

I did a search and it showed this list of cars with the most headroom including some convertibles!

My husband would always say go with an expensive sports car since they're made to fit tall athletes. Although the only ones that can usually afford the ones I'm talking about ARE athletes ...which is why Mr. J can only dream ;)

I was thinking maybe shaving the head but I figured it would be too snarky of a comment. Thanks for opening the door, Kristine.
Just make sure you read the car manual first!!!

I have a Mazda convertible and I was very upset when I read the manual after I bought the car and it had a huge warning in it - Do not have a roll over accident in this car as it may lead to serious injury or death. 8O

Well dang I was planning on going out and having a roll over accident. :rimshot:
Talk about a bunch of spoil sports.

Well seeing as how you said you sit tall. :sidestep:
I had a 1999 Saab 9-3 convertible that was extra roomy. Great car in summer or winter, or at least it was until I totalled it on the interstate.

Aw, I'm sorry, Nita. :(

My first car was a Saab. Old beat up thing, certainly no convertible.

I bet you didn't know that they also float...(or used to, not sure about the newer models) I remember a picture of one caught in flash flooding, floating happily down the street, passing other drowned vehicles.... 8O  Which is odd because the manufacturer also built airplane engines, but I can't say mine flew. Transmissions were very iffy

Volvos, on the other hand, do not float all that well (don't ask! ), which is ironic given that Volvo also makes marine engines, but never mind. Since they're both designed by Swedes (i.e genetically taller than average people - well, they were built by Swedes, who knows what owns what anymore) but given the SAAB's dual purposeness, I vote that Ron grabs a fishing rod and tries out the SAAB first. Of course, we expect you to invite us all over for grilled trout afterwards

LOL   :P
My hubby is 6'4 and he was able to fit in the new Ford Tbird. I love it!!!!
My husband is 6'4" and has plenty of room in my VW bug convertible. It is too much fun to drive too!

Or just remove the whole head     Or chop off at the knees

Jaguar convertable but you may need to win the lotto for one of them
Funny this topic should pop up.

I am 6'3" my smart Roadster has bags of head room

Unfortunately they are very difficult to register for use in the US so no help to you Ron :(

That was taken on the Stelvio pass in Italy just over a week ago.

I then followed that trip (Bavaria Italy Austria etc) with a camping trip in the UK

I decided to see if Archie would like to pop in for a visit (I was missing him as much as he was me!)

I normally take him everywhere in the back of my Audi, he did have his harness on and really seemed relaxed, although that may have had something to do with the vent pointing the aircon at his head keeping him cool.

as for the last two weeks over 3000 miles with some very spirited driving on some challenging roads with a fuel consumption return of just over 54 mpg. :D
Another thing about the Beetle is the extra wide door for people of girth......at least that's what Click and Clack recommended on their site.

I cannot remember if you said you were barrel chested.
I'm a big guy all around!
You could of course cut a hole in the roof and stick your head out, a la Dino in the Flintstones!

I've just bought a brand new Smart fortwo convertible - its fabulous !! roof off, loads and loads of room, its huge inside. Full leather seats, heated option also and has AC :o) As for fuel consumption, its just great 70 mpg.

Great for being towed on a motorhome Ron  www.smart.com

Realllly? ..........for Ron?

No offense Ron, but I think you'd look goofy in that b/c you're so tall. ;) Be equivalent of you buying a toyota echo which has more room than any other car its size. People would stare imo.
I'm actually staring at the beetle convertible a bit... too pricey though. It's too much just for me, and it's not a hardtop for Joan.

Sigh.

I've been looking at two other older cars...
I hope they're still listed:

http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/cto/1198434089.html

I like the white one with red... but $3,000 for a 28 year old car? Or $2100 for a 37 year old car? Really? It's not like they're show cars -- where the heck can I find any kind of a pricing guide for run-of-the-mill classic vehicles? (Classics, I believe, are 25-plus years old)
LOL - we had the hardtop version of the green one when the kids were little - what a luxury boat!!!

Ours was the same green with a black roof. Lots of room for the twins and all their stuff too.

And being older, I bet the stuffing in the seat sags and you will have PLENTY of head room with the top up. :D
I say get the El Dorado. I can see you, Joan & Mulligan riding around in it all 'pimped' out. 8)
