aggressive sheepdog

i have had a rescue OES for about a year now and he is VERY aggressive towards other dogs. he seems to only have problems with other unfamiliar dogs because i also have a rat terrier that he gets along fine with. he is not aggressive with people and seems to enjoy playing with cats. i have gotten bitten twice by him due to breaking up fight he has with other dogs. when we got him, the rescue said he loved playing with other dogs so his aggressiveness was completely unexpected.

the second day i had him, i took him to a dog park and he was seemed very happy to get out and run and he did not show aggression towards other dogs. it wasn't until the second time i took him to the dog park with my sister that he became aggressive. my sister was playing fetch with another dog and when the other dog came running back towards my sister, my dog got into a fight with him. ever since then, he has been aggressive with other dogs.

if anyone has any info or advice on this subject i would greatly appreciate it.

Dog parks aren't for all dogs. They can be stressful and make dogs more territorially and fearful aggressive if they're already anxious. This isn't meant to be a snarky answer but I'd say the best solution is to not go to the dog park. Does he display the same behavior when he's on lead and/on walks and you encounter other dogs?
Some dogs are just that way inclined, dog aggressive to other unknown dogs".

Firstly I would avoid the dog park for awhile, if you feel you need to go there with him then as a precaution, use a soft muzzle on him while off lead.

Secondly I would start back at basics, get a trainer in to work on this issue with him or join a local obedience class and under the tuition of the instructor he can learn basic skills like coming to you regardless when called, sit, stay etc and also on a lead in a controlled situation learning how to meet and great other dogs and just getting use to that through socialisation aspect of a class of dogs altogether on leads. He benefits too, build his confidence and also you are under the guideance of a trainer to work on his dog aggression with the dog under your full controll on a lead, later as his confidence builds you can then start working on off lead socialisation with other dogs under guideance from the obedience instructor..

He is a rescue so he has an unknown past, you dont know what happened to him in his past life, maybe he was attacked or bitten by another dog or maybe not, so go back to basics with him now in a controlled situation on a lead under guideance from a personal trainer or a local obedience club.

You said you have had this boy for a year now and on the second day he attacked, I would of been off back then working on why he is this way inclined with unknown dogs and working through that issue 1 year ago. It is only going to get more unpredictable and eventually real searious if he is off lead and really mauls another dog, if you dont put in some sort of training and controlled on lead socialisation with him. Is he neutered too? being a rescue I presume he would be, if not then snip snip to help take the edge of him a little along with good training and socialisation to build his confidence and trust in other dogs.
Sounds like he might think he needs to protect you from other dogs.
A good trainer who can watch him interact with you and other people, dogs etc would be well worth the time and money.
Good luck. :crossed:
