What kind of collar for long haired sheepie?

What kind of collar do you use for your long haired sheepie? In the past I have always used a rolled leather collar- I don't know the brand, but the color always seems to bleed onto my sheepie's white fur. I used a 1 inch fabric collar this weekend and discovered a massive matte on his neck. Just wondering what others use and if you have any problems.

Stephanie....

I have tried them ALL...Heart's fuzz either gets tangled...or she gets mats....

I have been using the rolled leather~~~and you are right, the color does bleed a little, but I don't mind that as much as the matts!!!!!

Heart has a rolled red leather collar, so she was pink until she got a bath.... :D :D After a while it stopped.....
I only put a collar on them if we're leaving home. I had a rolled leather one for my first OES (it never bled though...) but she was kept pretty short. All of mine have too much hair now except maybe Mad who doesn't need a collar, so we just suit up before we leave the house. These days I just use cute textile flat buckle (well, actually snap) ones. I work very hard to find collars that suit each dog's personality. Not that anyone can ever see them under all that hair

To be honest I don't even feel comfortable leaving a collar on them at home. I had to detangle two of the youngsters when they were playing once and decided it was a strangulation hazard. Scared the you know what out of me.

If you promise not to tell I once arrived at an obedience trial with belle to realize she didn't have a collar on and all I had was a snap lead. She was very hairy...I pretended to snap the lead onto a collar but actually just snagged a little hair, walked in the Open ring, unsnapped the lead from the imaginary collar  and handed it to the steward. When we were done I pretended once again to snap it to her imaginary collar before we left the ring. Good thing she knows what heel means...

LOL

I don't use collars either unless we're leaving home and then it's usually a rolled nylon choke. I also really like the british style slip lead, collar and lead in one.

When I was new to the breed and had a flat buckle nylon on my showdog one of my mentors came over to give me a grooming lesson and just about skinned me alive when she saw that.
I'm SO glad someone brought this up!!!

I had cute brown leather ones with little blue flowers; the brown leather bled and discolored Tonk's neck. Oddly; it didn't do it to Luna.

So then I got some pretty fabric ones; sort of an Asian themed embroidered satin. Doggy Daycare cleaned Tonks up after a poop roll, and didn't remove her color. She's still bright pink in the places that the fabric ran.

So I took the girls to a local dog store, told them my dilemma, and they recommended a nylon fabric weave with a cute floral pattern. This one is causing all sorts of horrible mats.

My groomer recommended what Kristine said; don't have them wear collars in the house. But with us still haveing the occassional dog-fight, I like having the collars to grab them by ( I know its a no-no, but I do it anyway). So now I am on the look out for a rolled leather collar that isn't stained dark brown. I think if I can find one that is natural leather, all my problems might be solved.
this is a great debate. When I first got Tyler he had a green nylon balistic collar on and was badly matted around his neck. I had to shave him and switched him to a rolled leather collar. It did bleed in the begining, but stopped long ago. Taggart now wears Tylers old collar which is now been in use for about 12 years.

I'm not a fan of the nylon balisic colors, but love the leashes. I will say that Daisy has very non sheepie type hair and it is thin, I put a pretty little nylon collar on her years ago and she has never matted from it. So it may really depend on the type of hair your sheepie has.
I don't use collars at all when we are home. Lots less mats without them. When we go out I do like the nylon that snap. I found cute collars and leashes with 'colorful happy faces' on them that just seem to fit. My groomer recommended the chain circle collar and we use those occasionally when we are in a hurry because they just slip over their heads.
We only put a collar on Ru when we leave the house. If we are going in the car he wears his harness which attaches to the seatbelt, if we are walking he wears a nylon collar. It's quite a event putting his collar or harness on, I carefully part the hair where the straps are and brush it out either side. This helps to prevent mats but they do still happen. I give him a quick brush through when we get back.
Just a halti/gentle leader in our home. Right now we use a normal cheap collar for the pup and no matter how long the walk ...we never have matts. I wish I could keep something on him 24-7 since he's a runner unlike any dog I've ever had.
I dont use a collar at home either. Havent found anything that doesnt cause matts.
I use a rolled nylon when Tiggy is having "good girl" days and a fine martingale (spelling?) chain that Lisa lent me when she's having "bad girl" days, currently that's nearly every day.
The chain breaks the coat though although less than the original choker did.
For years I used a slip/choke chain on all of my dogs. The links were not tiny, but they were not quite a medum link either. Our dogs have always been house dogs, so having them get caught on something has never been an issue - lucky, I guess. I never had an issue with matting around the neck (but I also take out the undercoat).

When Ben came along, I switched to roll collars - trying to be safer. So Ben and the girls have grown up with fixed collars - and I have been fighting matts ever since.
With hair - no collar at all.
Just from this weekend, Chewie had a good mat started from all the time with his loose fitting flat fabric martingale on. That was from 3 days and 1 night with it on. :( and I had done some brushing there too.

For those shaved, I get to use the fun collars. :D
No collar. When we go out, I use a British slip lead. I actually use those on all my dogs-- it's just easier.
I use the nylon flat collars on all my dogs. When Violet was a pup i had the same matt issue as everyone else. At that time I decided to keep their collars off at home and only put the collars on when going out. It keeps all of their hair so much nicer and I'm sure it is more comfortable for them.
einy has a beautiful black/red leather color with like red enamelled bones on it i bought him for his first birthday (he will be 5 this year so hes had it a while) . it was a small fortune too nearly $50. the only expensive thing i've bought him.

i leave his colar off in the house tho he does get one on for toliet breaks as i need to tie him up as we have no fence. and trips to the vet.

i keep it off so he doesn't get matts tho i've only just start this and he now only needs to go to th groomer for his twice yearly shave down (it took me a while to learn my leson)

i brought an english style slip lead over from the uk for walks.

he is shaved down at the moment so hubby just buts his colar and lead on so it getting some use.

zoe and einy
Matisse has a cream colored nylon collar - Cozette has a metal and nylon collar. Then again, they rarely wear them unless we're going somewhere.

We've used a retractable lead on Matisse when we plan on doing a lot of walking and just loop and clasp it around his neck. He's a nice slow walker, and no mats, knots or anything.....Hope this helps :)
I so wish I could leave Willows collar off, but I am so frightened she would somehow get out :( she did yesterday when one of my twins did not close the door properly, grrrrr luckily she stayed on the drive and it was only for a few mins, but if he had wandered off and had no i.d. what would happen then.

She is chipped as well though.

Oh the thought of them running off - oh no ...

Like most of you Ollie only has a collar for going out, otherwise matts !!! Its red leather on the outside, but has a really soft foam underneath, he's had it for years and its still going strong - did I mention it also has diamonte on them, it should be diamonds for what I paid for it £50 !!!! but he's worth it, the spoilt little sod
I leave Georges collar on all the time, incase he ever gets out, mind you he only ever goes as far as my neighbours conservatory foir a biscuit! I usually have a rolled collar on him as it doesn't matt his coat.

The law in the UK states all dogs must wear a collar at all times (when out in public) with a tag on which shows the owners surname address and telephone number.
If they don't have this the owner can be fined up to £1000 (even if they are microchipped)
i'm looking for a new collar, the flat leather one is bleeding all around my boy's neck and its not a pleasant site.

i have come across the "air collar", anyone have one? any good?

i dont mind what material i end up with as long as it doesnt bleed, or mat and if it will last a lifetime i will pay good money.

failing that, has anyone washed the leather ones in a machine to get the dyes out?
We use a blue flat leather collar, we only put it on when leaving the house. It bled into her white coat when it got wet for the first couple of weeks, but it would rinse right out, all the extra dye is gone now and it no longer bleeds. But it was amusing having a blue punk puppy for a couple of weeks. :D
Like everyone else it seems, long hair, no collar at home.

Longer hair....depends on the dog. Normally just a flat collar works for short periods. When Jack was more wild, a choke collar.
I like the martigales because I can slip it over the head. The ones with the click together snaps or buckles are a pain as the hair is getting in them each time taking them on and off. (Doesn't wear a collar at home, but we go places almost daily, so it's on and off, on and off...) And the martigale self tightens if the dog pulls, so no slipping over the head if they would panic, so no loose dog....another plus. :D
