OES Dog Nose Bleed-Nasal Tumor-Cancer

Not good news today.

The Vet Oncologist confirmed what I had researched on the internet regarding the expected longevity of my OES after being diagnosed with "Transitional Solid Nasal Carcinoma" (nasal tumor).

Life expectancy is 3 months with no treatment. I say no treatment, but we had the tumor removed (3 weeks ago).

The Oncologist suggests radiation therapy but on average it will only extend his life 12 months for a cost of 2-3000k dollars. The closest place from Oklahahoma is either the University of Missouri (they have a more aggressive treatment) or Dallas and he would have to stay and be away from me for one month. I have decided not to do that.

We do not know if it has metastized.

The reason I am posting this information is that I want to provide a resource for other OES owners in case they (god forbid) encounter this diagnosis. The oncologist in Oklahoma is only one of two in the state and she says that she only sees about 4 cases of this type of cancer at her practice a year!

I am supposed to give him omega three fish oil 4k a day and it is suggested that I change his diet to Hill's JD Dry Prescription Diet Dog Food mixed with Hill's ND canned dog food (also high in omega 3's).

The oncologist suggests that I give him "Deramaxx" in an attempt to combat the tumor in case it has "COX receptors on the cell surface".

Ron, I hope that you can help in making whatever adjustments need be in order for people to find this article in a search.

When I do a google search on the internet (not oes.org) for "OES bloody nose, OES nose bleeds, or OES nasal cancer another article comes up which is http://www.oes.org/page2/15327~Bloody_Nose.html
but nothing regarding my posts.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask me.

I thank everyone for their support so far in this difficult time.

Kim, I am so sorry.
I am so sorry you got the bad news. Hugs to you, your family and Pogo :ghug: :ghug:
Hi Kim
I am so sorry for this diagnosis.
I do know how hard it is just having lost
my bestest boy to Lymphoma in January.

I know for cancer a high protein/low carb diet is
reccomended, which I believe NF is.

Please ask the vet about the supplement CAS options.
It is an Immune support/antioxidant...I do believe it helped
Quin.
Good Luck with your baby.
Please let us know how things are going
:ghug:
I am so so sorry
I'm glad you've chosen to keep Pogo close to you rather than undergo treatment, it sound a lot better for him.
:ghug:
Ask your vet about using milk thistle for liver support with the Deramaxx. We used this for Beau along with the CAS options Kathy mentioned and I truly believe all of it helped. I'm so sorry you are going through this :( . We are a large group with many shoulders whenever you need them :ghug:
Oh, Kim! I'm so sorry for this diagnosis. I can't even imagine how you are feeling, but I think I would feel the same - keep him home with me. Not so much for the cost, but just for the fact that his time is still limited and he would be spending a month away from you - not acceptable.

As Holly said, we have many shoulders for you to lean on, cry to, scream - whenever you need us. :ghug:
Kim, so sorry about Pogo's prognosis, it had to be heartbreaking to hear the news. I, too, would do what you have decided and keep Pogo close for the limited time left. And, thank you for your info on this awful subject.
Kim, I don't know what to say. I feel so badly for you & Pogo. I would do the same as you have decided. Sometimes being home with loved ones is better care than all the medicines & treatments in the world. :ghug:
Wishing you and Pogo all the best.
Thinking of you. :ghug:
:ghug: to you and Pogo.
So sorry! You and Pogo will be in my thoughts and prayers. :ghug:
Hi Kim.

So sorry to hear about Pogo .I lost my sheepie Mitch in March to lymphoma .
I kept Mitch at home with us also rather than have him treated by an Oncologist .
He was treated with a very low dose chemo by my local vet and put on the cancer diet(high protein low carb) and cas options, sent across the water by a very kind person on this forum, and we had an extra 4 months with Mitch that we made every day a special day for him.

Thinking of you and Pogo

:ghug:

Oh Kim. This news is positively heartbreaking. I am so sorry to hear this diagnosis. I feel certain I would have chosen, as you have, to keep him with me. With time so limited and so few options available, I would want every minute I had with him.

Thank you for chosing to share this information with others, too. It might help another of us in a time of need.

Please know you and Pogo are in our thoughts and prayers. :ghug:
I'm so sorry to read of the news

My thoughts are with you. Enjoy your time with Pogo.

Hugs to you both
Kim, I so sorry.

I've know 2 OES diagnosed with the problem. It is very heart breaking.

I know Pogo is the most loved dog. Continue the great life for as long as possible. Only we look to the future, dogs live in the moment so as long has Pogo can be the center of your life......go for it.
kim so very sorry u are going through this my prayers are with you and your baby
kim, i am so sorry to hear about pogo...my thoughts are with you guys

Update everyone!

Pogo seems to be doing GREAT!

If you didn't know that Pogo has nasal cancer, you sure wouldn't be able to tell it from his behavior or appearance.

He is very active, always happy, has a great appetite, and still brings me his toys to play.

He hasn't had any more nose bleeds since he had surgery a month ago.

It looks like we are easily going to exceed the three month longevity since it first started about 9 weeks ago.

I guess it's all an estimate anyway.

Thought I'd share the good news and I'll keep everyone posted.
Hooray for Pogo! And for you too! That's great news.
That's fantastic news!!!
Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the update. :D
I'm glad for you and Pogo that it is a good news update. :D
That is good news Kim.

What a joy for you that Pogo is acting like his old self.
Thank you so much for letting us know - I was just thinking about Pogo today wondering how things were going.
That's wonderful news! Thanks so much for letting everyone know :cheer:
Thanks for the update keeping fingers crossed, wonderfull to hear he is doing good so far. :D
That is good news Kim. :D

Julianne and Marls
Woo-hoo! What a great update! Hopefully things keep staying this good, for a LONG time!
Good News Kim.... sending lots of Hugs to Pongo
Thought I'd update everyone.

Pogo made it about 6 weeks with no nosebleeds, but he had a small one this morning three minutes into our jog (bled about 1-2 minutes).

I took him in to see the surgeon this morning and he said that he thinks we ought to wait to see if the nosebleeds continue or worsen.

He stated that he has seen some dogs go as long as 6 months to 2 years after having a nasal tumor removed.

Pogo shows NO other symptoms of having cancer that I can detect. He is still a very happy dog, runs a half mile 2x's a day, has a great appetite, and brings me his toys to play with. He doesn't appear to be in any pain.
I never know whether to cheer or be sad when I read about Pogo.

:( :cheer: :(
Thanks Ron.

It is tough to deal with.

It will really be tough as he starts to decline.

I'm just not ready for it even though I know it is inevitable.

All I can do it cherish the time that we share beforehand.

Probably the worst part is that the surgeon said that eventually the cancer will invade his brain cavity.
I know just what you mean, Ron. Everytime I click on this for a Pogo update, my heart catches in my throat until I read GOOD NEWS and then I can release my breath. I stand on the brink between heartache and joy each time. I can only imagine what you're dealing with Kim. I am so glad he continues to do well.
I feel the same way--hold my breath as I click on. So glad to hear that to date Pogo is doing well. Special thoughts continue to be with you.
sending best wishes and kind thoughts to both you and Pago
Thank you for the posting. It assisted me in my research.
If I'm not mistaken, Pogo survived for about 10 months from diagnosis and surgical removal of the tumor.
Yes, that is correct.

If anyone would like to contact me, just Private Message me and I will be glad to share whatever information I can.

I know what an emotional struggle it is to go through.
I am so glad that I ran into your post. My lab/pit mix started bleeding with clots also in Dec. 2011. I took him to the vet, he mentioned that just from feeling his nose, that he did not think it was cancer, but a fungus infection in his sinus cavity. Also, his k-9 tooth was broken at the gum. I am very financially strapped due to losing my job in 3/2009. I got a care credit card and had (2) teeth pulled. He is still not responding to anti-biotics or the Vitamin K (to stop the bleeding). He is 11 yrs. old. I called the internist, cannot afford the procedure (1100.00-1200.00) It is just diagnostic. Anyway, she advised me to put him on inflammatory - Deramaxx. I gave him one last night. He seems to be a little better, but he does that. One minute, he is fine, then he is struggling to breathe. He still eats/drinks/plays. I just can't get the bleeding to stop. It is like his nose is clogged. It is getting worse. I really hate to lose him, he is my baby. Do you have any other suggestions, that I may try??? Thank you so much.... Bette --- hydemss@gmail.com

P.S. I am very sorry for your diagnosis on your family member.
