Is this dementia?

Luke will be 12 in a few weeks and recently he's had several "episodes". He can't get up without help and several times he's gotten weird and growls at me if I try to help him. It's as if he goes into a state where he doesn't know me and it's not like him at all. This is a serious growl and he bares his teeth as well. If I leave him alone for awhile then help him he's fine, like his mind has returned. It's only happened a few times but still it has me concerned. Any ideas?

It's heartbreaking when dogs we've known all our lives just don't seem themselves as seniors. We had a similar situation with Maggie McGee IV but there were lots of other signs as well. She had most every symptom of CDS, except incontinence, listed here: http://www.cdsindogs.com/CDSInDogs.aspx ... OO&sec=210

We gained another six months of quality life with Maggie by having her on Anipryl. Some people notice no change in their dog's behavior.

Big hugs go out to you and Luke from all of us.

Do you think he might be in pain? That can make the seniors growl and seem not themselves. I would consider taking him to your Vet for an evaluation.
It's really hard to say holly if it is a form of old age dementia, I do believe that some dogs go that way.

For instance with Kelsey in her last few years when she struggled up on her own she would toddle over to the wall and just stand there as to say I got up but what for :lmt: If I did not ask her what do you want do you want to go outside she would just stand there. I think she was a bit dementiaed as also take her out of her home enviroment she was worse and so stressed in the end being in unfamiliar territory. There were times with her also you could see the confusion and blank stare in her expression, like she was lost in space

With luke firstly I would see he is hearing OK, sight still good there and seeing that is OK to rule out confusion from that and also pain factor as well and have his heart beat check that it is also fairly normal, like no mummurs etc due to age. So maybe a vet check? To see then you can rule them out with him and maybe then put it down to a bit of dementia setting in.

So sad when our babies age and trying to work out what the problem is to be able to keep them happy in their golden years.

People say puppies are a lot of work, I say the other end of the spectrum is harder but they deserve that from the ones that have loved them all those years.

Best wishes with Luke and feel for you and luke at the moment hard to know what is causing this so just rule out those things firstly.

Hugs
Does Luke have seizures?(or has he ever)
It almost sounds as if he could be having
"absent seizures".
There are no convulsions or really any familiar signs
of a seizure.

Also, as far as dimentia I had alot of luck with
Science Diet B/D.
(don't typically like sd but, this worked well for us)
We also supplemented with Cholodin.

Good Luck to you and Luke.
Please let us know what happens.
