Daxiong Mao/Panda

Hi,

Daxiong Mao (Dansh-wing Mah-oo) is the chinese spelling and pronouciation of a Panda, China's national symbol. I found this out when I picked up a book at the library about Pandas.

Some of you may remember that Panda's original name was Robin when he lived in Hong Kong. With his new life I gave him a new name and it was through this forum that members unanimously voted on the name Panda. Thanks again to all of you that suggested it, as wherever we go people always comment how well his name suits him.

Here's some other things I have learned about Panda Bears and the comparison is quite hilarious to "my" Panda.

In Zoos, they often play for hours with big rubber balls, plastic hoops, metal barrels and other toys.
(Yup sounds like my boy, especially the rubber balls)

Pandas have skin of two different colors, the skin under the dark fur is dark, and the skin under the white fur is pink.

Their beautiful black and white fur looks almost like a costume for a party. Their round ears and black fur patches around their eyes make them look like delightful circus clowns.
(Again the description sounds like my boy, espcially since OES are considered the clowns of the dog world.)

People love giant Pandas for many of the same reason people love human babies. Pandas like babies look friendly and helpless. It often seems they are just waiting for you to hug them. Pandas also have large heads like babies and appear to have very big eyes. (The eyes aren't that big but the black patches around them make them look big) Pandas are also playful like babies. They often do things that are just plain cute!
(At this point the book illustrates a picture of a baby and of a Panda with comments such as - Big Face,Big Eyes, Looks Friendly, Round and Cuddly).

That last description made me smile as I realize my Panda has the best name suited for him. Luckily I let people on this forum choose his name as I had considered the name Dragon...what was I thinking!!

So I wondered how you guys came up with your boys/girls names?

Norman was named after the cow in City Slickers. They even kind of looked alike.
Carl's name is twofold; his full name is Maxwells Bud Carl, after my grandfather. (We haven't given them grandchildren yet, it's the best we could do for now.) Also, Carl on the Simpsons.
We love people names for dogs. We figure if we do have kids we'll name them Rover and Spot!
I love panda's.... there is also a kind of hamster called the panda hamster that is slightly larger than regualr hamsters, and has the markings and coloring of a panda, and the fur is a velvety texture, not silky like regualr hamsters. I'd love to have one but I've never seen one in a pet store around here. I have a friend in BC who has 3 of them and hopes to raise them, so maybe someday! LOL
(My hubby just shakes his head)
As for how I picked my girls names, they are loosely based on characters from a favorite series of books about the first north americans. Translated into english of course. Dancer, who is Tasia Hills Dancing Light, is based on a character called Little Dancer in a book called People Of Fire. Sky, who is Tasia Hills Evening Sky, is based on a character named Evening Sky in a book called People Of The Earth. It's not even a main character, but I loved the name. My next sheepie will be named Lakesong Caoimhe Dancer, who will be one of Dancer's daughters, and her call name will be Kiva (which is how Caoimhe is pronounced) .
Well I named Mickey and Jagger due to my love of Micke Jagger from the Rolling Stones. The Eddie is b/c we originally wanted to name him Edgar, but at the time Sam was 14months old and she would call him Eddie,so simple and cute
Since all our dogs have been rescues, we haven't had the chance to name any yet!

Our first dog was Buford, a name I loved and would consider naming another dog someday. The second dog was Farley, after the sheepdog in that one cartoon (sorry, can't remember the name of it). Don't know how Dresdan (our current dog) got her name, but I like that one, too.

We always said if we ever named a boy puppy, we would name him Hoover, after the vacuum cleaner, because that's what they do!

Chris
Yeah- names names! I love the name Panda- and it fits him so well!
My kids:

Iris- named for the flower (one of the flowers which can produce a true "blue" color, rather than purple) since she's a blue-point. Also after the greek goddess Iris- She is the goddess of the rainbow- So Iris' registered name is "Snowfire's Templeflower"

Bell- Since she is a mettalic grey, and especially when she was very little, had very melodic, chirping voice, she became "Bell". Which is just as well- because she loves anything that rings, tingles, or jingles! Bell's Registered name is "Lylar's Templebell".

Karen :)
I love hearing how everyone named their furkids.

As for Albert...my dad had an OES growing up who's name was Mr. Albert, so I named Albert after him. His full name is Mister Henry Albert...Henry cause it's cute. I considered Bartholomew for a while, but figured everyone would shorten it to Bart...
Marianne,

I loved hearing about your Panda. A great post. :D

My kids wanted to name Jack "Wags" off of a popular kids show "The Wiggles". I didn't like that and wanted him to be named "John". The kids looked at me and said no to John. So then I said Jackson, Jack for short and it stuck. So his full name is Jackson Wiggle. It suits my big wiggly boy very well. Annabelle's name came quite easily, Ashlan named her after the movie"All dogs go to Heaven" The angel dog is named Anabel. I wanted to name her Yoko though...LOL
Now on the the cats: I couldn't forget them now could I....LOL
We are HUGE disney fans. We have some of them named after the movie "the aristocats" Thomas O'Malley, Toulouse, Berlioz, and Marie. Then we have Kiara from "The Lion King 2" We are bringing 2 more girls into our family in the next few months from our breeder in Arlington. We have thought of the names Nala and Sarabi. They aren't here yet, so we might change our minds before then. LOL
When we chose our cattery name, we were hoping for the name Aristorags, but it was already taken. We don't mind, I think familytimerags fits us very well.
I loved hearing everyone's names and the reason they picked them! Great post, Marianne! :D

Stormi and co.
Jasper got his name just like we named our kids. Go through a bunch of names until we come to one we both agree on. :) No real story behind it. We're still trying to pick out his "fancy name" though...lol
I love hearing about all the names! Stormi- Nala and Sarabi are great names! But, they'd almost have to be brown, in my mind- cause of the lions! Are either of the girls chocolate or sealpoints?

Karen :)
Hi Karen,

I am not completely sure yet that Nala and Sarabi will be the names yet or not, but it is on the top of our list. We are also unsure yet what color or patterns will be as I am waiting for show quality. It takes several weeks before the color comes in enough and just normal growing before it can the show potential can be determined. The pedigrees are wonderful though with champions and grand champions and even a couple of Supremes in there. I have all the faith that if I am patient the right girls will come along. She is keeping an eye on a blue colorpoint, a seal colorpoint, and a lilac mitted. They were born last month and are looking so cute, but as I mentioned not sure if they will turn out like we hope.
Here is a couple of pictures of Kiara. She will be at the CFA show in Tulsa in the middle of March. I have sent her picture to several ragdoll breeder/show people and they all say she will do great. I am very excited.

This picture is Kiara at 4 months, she is going to be a big girl.

Thanks for letting me brag a little.

Yay Kiara! I'm sure she will do wonderfully! She is such a beautiful girl!
Kiara is gorgeous! I love her blue eyes.
Hi Everyone,

I loved reading all the stories about how your furballs got their name. You notice how we have names which really suit our Sheepies characters? You'll rarely meet a sheepie with the name of Thor, Dakota, or Thunder. Nope our boys and girls have names like Panda, Merlin, Dudley, Yuki, Dancer, Gracie, Georgie..etc... :D

Stormi - Kiara is one beautiful looking kitty! OhMyGosh what a housefull you have too!! I have my three dogs Panda, Merlin and Blue and the three girl kitties, Daisy, Mama Kat, and Lil Girl, plus the boy Paris but lately he's been coming to Grey Baby ( he's the wuss of the bunch)

Marianne and the boys
Stormi- I think you have a winner with Kiara! Her lines are lovely, and her coloring very even- always a plus. What a beautiful little face. Her eyes are gorgeous! That was always a problem with Iris- her eye color is washed out- not china blue. Is Kiara a lilac?
Thanks everyone for the compliments on Kiara. :D
Kiara is a blue bicolor. She will continue getting darker until she is about 2. She will continue growing until around 4. Her Daddy is Champion Vonjo Jabberwocky Kelley, and her grandpa is Champion Sentimental Gulliver of Vonjo. Her mom got all of her point for championship, but never finaled. She was bred before that could happen.
The new babies we are expecting, are from Adorableragdolls in Arlington, TX. They are the same lines as Toulouse, our alter. I am very, very excited....LOL
Thanks AGAIN for letting me tell about them. I am like a kid at christmas...LOL

I really like to hear how everybody got their names too. I had Clyde's name picked out the first night I saw him. He had that goofy little dummy look to him and I don't think there's a name better than Clyde that describes that personality! I didn't get him that night because I wasn't sure I wanted the responsibility of another dog. But I couldn't get him out of my head-- he was all I could think about and I stayed up the entire night thinking about him. I decided to give myself a full 24 hours to make the decision and my the end of the work day I was counting the minutes till we could go get him.

He got his fancy name in a kind of funny way. For the longest time, when we'd pretend my other dog was actually talking to us, we always gave her the same voice as Cartman, the fat kid from South Park. I started doing that for Clyde too and my boyfriend said that Clyde was too sweet and innocent for that and that he was more like Butters, the nice kid on the show. Here's a pic of Butters if you're unfamiliar with him: http://lescahiersduburger.free.fr/News/ ... tters2.jpg

He even has the same hair. The clincher was when we were watching an episode a few days after bringing Clyde home and Butters made a comment about his birthday being on September 11. Ironically, so is Clyde's!
Stormi - Kiara is absolutely gorgeous!!!
