Newby here with a flea Rx question

Hi everyone! Got my 1st oes about 3 months ago. I am absolutely smitten!!!

Question (there will be lots more in the future as well)~I started with Frontline flea and tick but it only seemed to work for a few days and then I noticed fleas on her again. Poor baby is extremely sensitive to them! I bathe her once a week so thinking it might be the frequency of baths, I got her switched to Comfortis, which is an oral flea medication. I don't think it will work on ticks though, so you have to be very careful about that.
Anyway, it seemed to work at first, then about 2 weeks into her first dose, upon wiping her feet after we went out I noticed a couple fleas on her.

We have a labrador also, and he doesn't seem to have the same flea attraction issue the sheepie does and he is just on the Frontline.

Any ideas on why these flea meds aren't helping? They are coming from the vet's office, so I am guessing the meds are legit.

If it ever stops raining here (we are in Texas) I will get my husband to spray around the yard area for fleas to see if that helps.

Meanwhile, I would love to hear input on this! Thanks so much :!:

Welcome.
Have you treated the house for fleas? If not, the fleas are still there too. And the car.

When we know we have fleas, we treat with Frontline, give them CapStar and have the house/yard treated on the same day. We usually go to a hotel while the inside is treated and aired out.

The CapStar starts working in 30 minutes and lasts for 8 hours.

And don't complain about the rain. Sure beats the drought of the last couple of years! I love having my sprinkler system turned off.
Where do you live in Texas? I'm in the Metroplex.
i bathe my sheepie once a week too... Advantage is much better, my vet says, for frequent bathers, but again, no tick prevention. It is also extremely useful to put the application on 3 days or so AFTER the bath (topical medication travels through the oils on the pet's skin) and wait several days before bathing again. Honestly, after a flea treatment, I would usually either skip a bath that week or wait a full week and restart bath day on that day.

I've never had much of a problem with fleas (knock on wood), though last year I started switching to more natural products (www.onlynaturalpet.com) and treating the yard, too. Make sure you sweep all the floors in your home frequently, and throw the sweepings directly into your outside garbage can. a flea collar in the sweeper is helpful too. ;)
Where are you in Texas? I am having the same problem here in the Houston area. I have just switched to Comfortis and according to my vet, it is much like Capstar in that it starts working in 30 minutes. I have fogged my house and planning on doing my yard today. I have resorted to using an old natural flea spray when I do see them. Seems to be helping some.

I hope this is just a bad time for fleas that will soon end but have a feeling we are going to be in for a long summer with the miserable Fleas.

Michelle
we had a flea issue a couple of years ago and switched to Promeris to get rid of the fleas.

Now we had to switch to advantix because this year our issue is ticks, not fleas :?

and welcome
How soon after applying the Frontline are you bathing her? I know you aren't supposed to get them wet for a couple of days after you first put it on. I wonder if she needs a few more days for the stuff to really get in her system before the bath? I don't really use the stuff but I know it can take a full day after applying it to kill the adults and eggs, too. Another thing to think about: is she getting the proper dose for her weight? Sometimes as they grow so fast, it's hard to keep up with the dosage changes!
Thanks for all your answers! We are a little east of the DFW Metroplex on a small farm for those that asked.

Yep, I made sure the dosage was right for her weight. She is definitely growing fast though! I think perhaps I should have waited longer to bathe her afterward even though I waited a day.

The comfortis doesn't seem to be doing the job either though and it is the oral prevention. I think that we are just having an unusually high flea infestation this year with all the rain. We are going to spray an outdoor flea spray in the yard around the house later today. Hopefully that will make a difference. I'll let y'all know.

Now off to a different post for a different question-this time it's on behavior issues!! Thanks!

Welcome to our little OES corner of the web!
Welcome and good luck! Those buggers are the dickens to get rid of once they find you.

Treat your yard and house and then do the capstar. Then, start all over wtih the flea meds. Frontline PLUS works on ticks and fleas. I found the plain old Frontline does not do fleas well at all. You have to use the PLUS.
Just a little side suggestion here: Every time we have had
fleas I have found it most important to interrupt the life
cycle. Fleas reproduce quickly, and if you don't treat at all
stages, you may miss a few and in a month you'll be back
where you started.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Great point, Shellie.
