Food reccomendation for a diabetic dog?

One of our Basset Buddies dogs was just diagnosed with diabetes. She is a sweet dog. I did her relinquishment and transport to her foster home.

Sad story as well - Snickers is 12 and her family lost their home. The dad had a heart attack, open heart surgery. Big hospital bills and the hospital started garnishing his wages. So much that they lost their home. Had to move into a smaller rental, no dogs allowed over 25 pounds. The poor guy was in tears giving up his dog.... :(

Snickers was diagnosed Monday. She is stabilizing well in insulin. Lisa (her foster mom) was asking if anyone had experience with a diabetic dog, and in particular what foods worked. She has vet ideas, just wanted to know if others have been there and what helped.

Thanks!

Dry dog food are for the most part, too high in carbos. One would look for a high protein, one with vegetables and lower emphasis on grains and fats. What's that one with dehydrated food............"something" Kitchen?? A friend feeds that to one of her Pyrs and says some days she's tempted to make herself a portion, it smells that good.

Canned isn't always a safe alternative.

Probably the best idea is to start "cooking" for the dog. Emphasis on lean meats, vegetables and healthy grains such as oats or brown rice. A BARF diet comes to mind as well. [/url]
I feed Dudley (Bichon Mix) Buffalo Blue Weight Control and he is doing very well on it. We are about to celebrate 3 years with Diabetes and you'd never know the little guy had anything wrong with him. We are working on getting him to lose a little more weight. I have tried so many different foods and have found that Buffalo Blue works the best for us. What works for one doesn't always work for another dog.

Here is a great website that I have learned so much from and has probably saved Dudley a few times. The site won't ever take the place of a vet but some vets just don't have enough experience with Diabetes or want to prescribe exactly what is in the textbook. I have learned with Diabetes it is best to get them on a food that is good for them and they will eat (most important) and then adjust the insulin to the food.

If she needs to talk to someone, PM me and I can send you my contact info. I am no expert but have finally learned what works for us. This is great seeing as one vet said Dudley won't live much longer and Diabetes with run my life. Neither one of these statements are true.
