Herding?

Hello all,

This post isn't about a problem behaviour as such but I just share it anyway to contribute to the wider body of sheepie knowledge.

Ollie is a lovely dog and very affectionate when he feels like it but he can be quite aloof sometimes. If we leave him for a few hours in the house (never crated, he has the run of the house) then he barely bats an eyelid when we go out. No whimpering or barking, he just settles down to sleep. And when we come back he acknowledges our return with a sort of nod but we definitely don't get the excitable, leaping up, tail-waggy, face-licky thing.

BUT .... if someone in the house goes to the bathroom, then the second Ollie hears that door latch click shut, even if he is sound asleep, he is up and racing to the bathroom, usually slamming right into into the door and trying to get in! Then he waits outside until the occupant comes out before returning to whatever he was doing before (usually sleeping).

Not sure what that means. Is it something to do with the herding instinct, wanting to keep everyone in the family together?

Best wishes,

Lee

Is it only the bathroom door? What if you shut yourself in the bedroom?

Maybe he's worried there's a roaring monster in there. :D It roars and whoever's in there comes out - must be dangerous.

Or maybe he's just worried you'll accidently flush yourselves and never be heard from again.
You mean you didn't know there's a secret escape hatch in the bathroom????????? 8O Where it leads I have no idea but my dogs think if I go in there I am never coming out!
He is probably thinking - noooooooooooooo don't do that in my water bowl you horrible uprights!

This is known as "velcro dog!"
Sounds quite normal here. So I quit shutting the door and now have them in the bathroom with me or waiting just outside the door. If I shut the door, I'll have four of them stacked up waiting for my appearance.

This has become so common, Harry has decided his PLACE is outside the bathroom door. It's his day and night location earning him the nickname, The Bathroom Toll Booth.
