Dang Ticks!!!

I need some help - - I use Frontline Plus and put it on every 28 days - but I still find ticks on Winston ( we just moved to the deep woods in MN) - most of the ticks I find are crawling or dead but I have found two engorged on his front legs. I know some people here use garlic to keep the ticks away. Could someone please help me figure the dose to give? I know garlic can be toxic so I am nervous giving it - but I am at my wits end. I have tried talking with my vet about all of this - but he thinks the Frontline is enough. I don't agree.

Also - does anyone do the " Tick" vaccination? The vet is really pushing it - I titers test and don't like to vaccinate if I don't have to - - -but I don't know what to do anymore.

Garlic does not help. Frontline will help with your fleas, not so much your ticks. Advantix is best for ticks.

I vaccinate all my dogs for Lyme becasue it is so prevelant in our area. Infact two of my dogs have Lyme and we still vaccinate to minimize additional issues (on this I am taking my vet's and it seems to be the prevailing wisdom in the North East.)
Awwww...poor Winston (( and YOU!!))...I have not advice, just letting you know how sorry I am!!! I have heard that fleas and ticks WILL be very bad this summer!!! We have never had a problem, but there is always a first time!!!!

Keep us posted!!!!
Oh gosh, Stephanie. I hate you're having such a hard time - and so early in the season. Yikes. i have used Frontline Plus and Advantix both. They work pretty good for me. But, I also treat my yard. Have you done that yet? :?
I feel your pain. :(

I have found 2 ticks stuck on Chewie and I found one walking through his hair Sunday at the weight pull 8O (indoors all day!)

None on any of the other 5 dogs in the house...I think my boy is a "tick" magnet!!!
It's been a really really bad year for ticks as far as I can tell by the numbers of people visiting oes.org's tick pages.
I use this:

http://www.earthanimal.com/acatalog/earth_animal_herbal_internal_powder_yeast_free.html

I haven't found any ticks or fleas. It cost $40 and I had it last season and I still have 1/4 of the bottle left. Their burps are stinker after their meal I put that in though
We use Vectra-3D for Maggie, and our vet uses it on his hunting dogs too year round. He hunts in northern Wisconsin. He recommends it over Frontline for dogs up here.

Maggie did not have any tick issues last year on it (they were all dead when I found them). When I found one attached this year, it was right on the edge of her ear opening and hadn't been there long. I would assume that since there isn't really any "meat" of body/skin there, the Vectra-3D may not have been potent enough. She is at the end of her month and I found 3 dead ones last night after we were at the dog park...so it does work!

Good luck and I wish I had an answer for you about the garlic.
Thanks everyone. I will give everything suggested a try -

By the way, I am sorry if my Subject line was offensive to anyone - I didn't even think about it - - I am sorry.

Thanks again :D - -if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.
:(

No advice Steph, just sympathy.

What a drag to have to deal with this. It takes away from the fun of being in a new house.

Ummm not wanting to compound any possible offense but I'm not from round your neck of the woods, Is d--g a swear (cuss?) word??? 8O I always got the impression it was an OK word like drat (hope that's an OK word) and what about darn, is that offensive??
Gosh there might be heaps of words that have been mistranslated in translation so to speak.
Its probably the Aussie penchant for using swear words instead of adjectives. :) We're so verbally lazy we like to shorten everyone's name to preferably one syllable and gave up thinking of adjectives in favour of a good old swear words.

There are alot worse words that could go in front of ticks!
I have no idea what was there before I changed it to "Dang" -- all I saw were symbols like #$%@#$. While perfectly acceptable to me, it would have driven the forum software batty. ;)
Well if it would let me I could post "swear word" forum software just to drive you batty Ron but I wont.

Software is funny stuff I sent an email to a friend who works for a major hospital and it was bounced back to me due to what I thought was a fairly innocuous word. But the bit that cracked me up was the message that came back with it about it being to protect hospital staff. They'd obviously never heard my friend in a bad mood. 8O

I appreciate the sentiment though! Unfortunately there is some pretty awful stuff online.

Hi Ron - Sorry - I had no idea about the software. I was using the symbols in place of a swear word ( I was really angry about ticks) - so when the subject was changed I assumed someone knew what I was thinking and was offended.
And there was me thinking " I've heard of sheep ticks, but what's a Dang Tick?"
Not one tick (knock on wood) on Patch with Advantx - she was out laying in the grass for several hours tonight enjoying beautiful weather while i cleaned out some beds and the pond. Now that I've read complaints about ticks I will check every square inch for the suckers. Thank you for the heads up.
