Ticks

Need some advice. Mardi had a tick on his head today. I pulled it off with tweezers after dousing it with alcohol and then put some antibiotic cream on it. What do you guys use to keep ticks off your dogs. I use Sentinal for the fleas and heartworm but it"s not for ticks. I haven't used anything topical because were always hugging him . Need suggestions or advice? I didn't thinjk he would get ticks now because it's still pretty cold outside. Wrong. I think ticks are  very evil.

Hi Herbgirl,

Poor Mardi!

Ron posted some excellent info , complete with pics (shudders) on this forum last Spring. It's definately worth checking out by clicking the SEARCH button at the top of the page.

Merlin got one last year and as they are rare in my area, I wondered what that "thing" was on his head and rushed him to the vet. 75 dollars poorer and much smarter as a result, I was advised to buy a tick collar for my boys next time I take them to the Island for holidays. (As that's where he got it from) I bought the ones they have at the vets and they work great! I'm going to purchase them all one again this year. The vet highly recommended one and I'm sorry I forget the brand name at the moment but did buy it through their office.

Hope that helped and give Mardi a belly rub for me.

We use Frontline Plus - and we are always hugging Tucker too. It is for
fleas and ticks - and I saw just recently you can get one for mosquitos
too. I have never had any trouble with fleas or ticks since we've been
using it. You use it once a month - comes in a 3 pk I think. It absorbs
ino the skin almost immediately. I know some people are not too keen
on using a product like this, but I would rather do this than have to pick
ticks off the dog. I had fleas in the house once too- and anything I can do
to avoid that is great by me, it was horrible.

In the great circle of life what real purpose do fleas and ticks
serve really? I really don't see it.... Nasty critters
I use frontline plus also, it does a great job!!

The one that repels mosquitos is called Advantix. The only problem with advantix is that it is very harmful to cats!!!!!!

It will kill a cat if it gets enough on them. So if anyone uses this please keep cats away from dogs for several hours to make sure it is dry.
I don't think I've ever seen a tick. I thought Winston had one last summer, but now I don't think it was.
I use frontline too! I agree they are evil little creatures! You need to be careful with frontline and young children (I think) - so check into that!

We live in an area which has a high deer tick population,
as well as dog ticks.

We have had good success with Frontline Plus.
It protects against fleas, brown dog ticks, American dog ticks
lone star ticks and chewing lice, according to their brochure.

It comes in different treatment doses based on the weight of the
dog.

Our vet felt it was the best option...
We use Frontline also but had stopped during the winter months. Apparently that's not going to work anymore.

Ugly little things.
We too are Frontline Plus folks! I've gotten rescues from the shelter covered with ticks! Ever fill a small jar with those #$%!! things? YUCK! Remember, the babies are really tiny, so pulling off the adults may not get them all. Frontline doesn't always control all the ticks. We can have outbreaks so bad you question if it even works at all! You may have to look at your property and do a bit of insecticide spraying.......which I HATE...but it might knock down the population.

Also watch inside your house! Ticks will migrate to the walls and climb up them...super gross. Vacuum often and dispose of the debris....completely out of the house.
I've used Frontline too and haven't had any issues. Since we live in an area of the country where deer ticks are a nuisance, we also had to get the lyme vaccination as well for Maddie. I am such a paranoid freak though with all of that fur, I'm afraid one of those little critters could jump onto my sweet girl and I'd never find it. Anytime, I see a spec of something on Maddie while I am grooming her, I start to jump to all sorts of conclusions and then it ends up being a spec of dirt. Hopefully, we won't see any of those little critters at all!
What a yucky topic... I'm going to have nigthmares now!!!!

We've had the ocassional tick, but for us constant grooming and checking have worked for us. Every time we take doggies to the dog wash, they use the anti-tick bath. Thanks for the frontline tip!
Icky icky ick!!!!! I have serious tick-phobia (I don't go into forested/nature areas without bug spray on!). Considering MN has big tick issues in the warm months- you can bet you A** pup will have tick protection on them from day one. ewww... shudder. 1 more reason kitty girls stay INSIDE!

That's interesting . I didn't know they had a vaccination against Lyme Disease . I'm going to ask my vet about it. I got the tick off his head but I can still feel a bump. I pulled it off with the tweezers but am not sure if I got it all. I'm hoping it will come out when the scab falls off. I've been checking his head and belly now every time we come back from a walk. I hope it didn't come from the staw I put in the yard to keep the mud at bay. Does anyone have an easier way to get the tick to leave loose. I doused it with alcohol thinking it would let go but that didn't work. They just keep holding on when you pull them with the tweezers. tried nail polish before to and that doesn't work. I heard of touching a cigarette to them but theres no way i'd try that i'd be afraid i'd accidentally burn my dog or set him on fire.

Hello there. The vaccination against lyme disease is actually a 2 part vaccination spread a few weeks apart. In speaking with 2 different vets, they basically told us that since we live in Delaware, we really should get Maddie vaccinated. It's a major issue here. You should ask your vet about it.
Herbgirl- make sure to keep an eye on that bump- tick bites can get infected if the any part of the tick (usually the jaw) remains in the bite. The initial bump is probably just a small allergic reaction to the anticoagulant though- just like any other insect bite. I've heard rubbing the tick in any sort of vegetable oil helps with the removal- I haven't had to do it yet though!

Karen :)
I live in tick country - rural Mississippi. We've always used Frontline with our cats & dogs. Works great!
No, don't rub oil or use the hot match end.......all those cause the tick to "vomit" back into the dog........I know, ICCCKY! Get a tissue or toilet paper, cover your fingers and get your finger nails down under the tick head and slowly pull back........slowly. You've got to convince the tick it's their ideal to let go......ok, ticks don't think, no brain. If you are squeemish, don't have finger nails or whatever, there are tick removers. Kinda like a small spoon with a slit in it, put the slit under the head and slowly pry back. If you are good with tweezers or forceps, they work, but I squish too easily with those. Grasping the tick should be avoided as much as possible least you squish it back into the dog..........I know, ICCCKY.

Do not POP the tick with your fingers, the contaminated blood could carry disease that would get into you......Rky Mtn. Spotted Tick Fever for example. Drop the tick into a jar with rubbing alcohol. You want them dead and disinfected. Don't throw the "raisins" on the ground and stomp on them........I know, ICCKY.......it just stains the sidewalk and spread the contamination around.

Someone mentioned washing the area afterward, excellent. I forgot to mention it. Yes, the feeding spot will be sore and even swollen for a few days. If it infects, go to the vet. Poor Harry was so tick sore after we worked over him, he didn't want us touching him, but he liked the soothing bath. Then came the Frontline. It took several days for the remaining hidden ones to appear and die.

Oh, yeah, don't forget to wash yourself after handling ticks.
