Girlfriend thinks I'm a nutcase!!

I have a girlfriend who is very concerned about presentation (of self, house, you name it really). We have been mates since 1983 at Uni so we feel pretty comfortable saying what we think!!!
Felicity thinks I am a total nutcase as I happily spent 4 hours grooming Tiggy this morning (Tiggy was less happy than me, more long suffering, with lots of sighing and huffing) and then I whinged and moaned about having to spend 15 mins blow drying my own hair, SO boring.
Felicity cannot for the life of her figure it out. I on the other hand think foofing ME is a big, fat waste of time. Its one of those areas where we agree to disagree and appreciate each others differences.

I don't think MOST people understand why we have dogs with long hair, so high maintenance, and for my family ..."why we have dogs that just aren't so bright." ;)

Ahhhhh........but have they ever considered that maybe our dogs are actually brighter? By this I mean they don't waste their time doing thing other dogs normally do. They want to do things that show a result! My dogs don't get an ice cream cone for just acting cute & cuddly! They get on for winning at the dog show or performing well at a trial. So they have figured out where to expend their energy!

Has she considered the fact that when Tiggy is present, no one even sees you? No offense, but in my experience I might as well just be a light post when Oliver is in public. I love keeping him beautiful because the compliments and attention he gets makes me feel good!

Too true, what human?? Oh that thing holding the lead who is here to answer any questions we have about the big, cute, hairy dog!!
Very true. :D

That very same topic was discussed this weekend at the show. Myself, Kristine and Sunny were laughing over the fact that we spent an entire 3 day weekend grooming 4 dogs.....and we spent 5 minutes before ring time on ourselves.....
There is nothing wrong with any of us. I don't have much hair so I love to show off Shamu's hair.
I know alot of people who think that sheepies aren't to smart.
They've never really spent any real time with them
I'm with you; with 2 Sheepies, I try and brush them out every night, and I do a full groom about once a week. My own hair is what I call "wash and wear"; I often don't even blow it dry!!! However none of this surprises my friends: i was neglectful of my own appearance YEARS longer than I've had sheepdogs! :D

Yes, and the corollary was the observation that most of the best dressed/coiffed handlers have wash n wear breeds

Sunny, Dawn and I all predictably pretty much looked like hay stacks

It's pretty sad when you sneak unentered dogs in to work on them during your "down time".

We won't get into some people changing right there in the pig pen where we were grooming (literally a pig pen - the show was at a fair grounds and Dawn and I were each set up in our own pig pen    Needless to say Sybil felt right at home  ). At least Dawn had the modesty to avail herself of the port-a-potty... 8)

Uhm....I can't help it that I am exceptionally good at changing in public...and knowingly clumsy enough to drop my clothing in toilets....which is why I adopted my dressing for show strategy in the first place.

I have always thought it funny...when you look at most OES folks, well our dogs ARE generally groomed better than we are...but as a number of you already stated, most others don't even see you when you are out with a sheepie...so does it really matter what you look like?

Oh and I too I get upset when my hair takes longer than 3 minutes to dry! 8O

Well, mine does take more than three minutes to dry, but it helps that I can use the dogs' stand dryer to do so

My daughter has informed me I have to have OES - cause they are the only creatures with shaggier hair than I have! She also informed that when i get it cut i have to tell the person "It has to be cut so it is supposed to look messy - it will end up that way anyhow!"

Of course I also can be very lazy about blowing out th edog's hair while I groom. Is there a wash and wear OES?

Yup, here's one (rescue dog at my vet's office):

Feel free to take the picture with you to your hairdresser so she knows what you're aiming for... :sidestep:

He actually grew into a lovely dog. Here he is only weeks later and right before he went to his new home, most likely after some touch -up scissor work by Dr Amy (Kerry, maybe this one will work better for you - shall I give Amy a call and see if she has an opening... ? )

Aha another reason to add to my list of why I should spend a lot on a stand dryer when my one and only sheepie is a pet and not a show dog. A bit more saving up and I can feel a purchase coming on.
We must be "Soul Nutcases" together Mim

My mum comes over and even commented on the house is like a "Dog Kennel" 8) My reply to her is now Woof Woof come on in :P

Yep the dogs are house dogs, crates pens in one room, stand dryer in there and usually the grooming table permantly up in the family room, with dog mats on the tiles and dog toys everywhere

I say to visitors now "Welcome to the Dog Kennel" when they visit

My hair well tied up all the time, dont have enough time to bother fussing with it. Dog shows, wack it up in a pony tail or knot with a scrunchie wack on some hair spray to hold it then off we go after 2-3 days of getting a dog ready I am so over hair and cant be fussed with my own. :P
When my husband and I were in college and dating, we used to go to his parents house to see his sheepie, Maudie. She was kept outside, so we would bathe her and comb her out while sitting in front of the fireplace. I thought it was good times, but my husband has confessed that a few times when he was home, his mother suggested calling me and having me come over. My future husabnd declined because we would be bathing Maudie and combing her out. That's okay - I married him to get his dog. And it worked, Maudie was "my dog."

I still fine it relaxing to sit in front of the fireplace and comb out the dogs. they like it too - huge fight to be the first.

Well maybe its the lack of the fireplace, but mine seem to fit to be last
I too groom Charlie every day, while myself, well I dont care at home how I look like. Especially when I'm not even leave the house all day.

Charlie is my "Teddybear" and even my son Max gets exited after I brushed her, cause her bum and everything looks sooo "BIG" and cuddly, he straight jumps on her and cuddles her.

I only go to bed later, so what's the point? I can understand you very much! Stick with what YOU wanna do!!!

..... and I agree that grooming Sheepies is relaxing!!!
