bad breath

last night i noticed walter had unusually bad breath, and i just noticed that he still has it today. we havent changed his diet or given him anything different to eat, i am pretty sure he didnt get into anything, and he just went to the vet the other day and i had her look at his teeth and she said they look fine.

its really really bad soi brushed his teeth and gave him a little listerine (which he did not appreciate...) but it only hindered it a little..
any ideas on what its from or how i can get rid of it?

Maybe more water? Or maybe one of those chlorophyll flavored treats?
Bad breath can indicate problems with kidneys. Is he urinating okay?
When was the last time he had his teeth cleaned??

How old is he??
Hi,

Merlin recently had a fowl smell and I noticed it came from his mouth area. I too checked the teeth and all seemed fine but the smell continued. It turned out he had an infection on his lip. A trip to the vet found this out. OES has their lips kinda curled at the sides of their mouth and the vet thought perhaps a bit of food depris got caught there and caused an infection. It took a dose of antibiotics to get rid of it.

Thought I'd mention this just in case. (check side of his lip, lift up and check underneath)

Good Luck and give Lil Walty a pat from me.
I'm not sure if its more serious than bad breath, but for that, my vet advised me to put a little scope his his water every so often to help with his tarter and breath......I just keep a spray bottle with water and mouth wash in it and every week or so, I spray some in his water.
hes almost 2, has never had his teeth cleaned, we went to the vet last week and she said they were fine, i checked his mouth and there is no apparent problem... but its still there.
i got hime dentabones, chew stix, treats with mint and parsley and ive been brushing his teeth.
should i go back to the vet?
If it doesn't go away - I would bring him in. What type of food is he eating? Have you changed anything you are giving him lately???

What about the meds he is on? Is that a side effect??
Is the listerine you used the kind you put in your dog's water?

I used to use that for my maltese. It works wonders!!! My sister-in-law uses an expensive brand that she swears by. Mine was the cheap kind from petsmart. Vet said it was safe for the kitty too, but it took only putting a drop at a time in the water and increasing the amount slowly so the cat couldn't tell. However, the stinky breath would come back if you don't use it daily.

Once I got both of their teeth cleaned, I took them both off of it. I can't believe the improvement it made.

Maybe you should give it some time (the bones, etc)?
I swear this isn't a smart aleck reply, but could he be eating his own poop? Clyde surprised me with some foul breath a couple of times that I
couldn' t place and then I caught him in the act and matched the odor immediately.
he eats pedigree lamb and rice, and has been eating that for about a year. i have literally changed nothing, and hes been on his medication for so long that i dont think it would be a side effect. thats why im so nervous because it seems so out of the blue and it is sort of a strange odor, not your typical bad doggie breath.
and walter has never eaten his own feces and he doesnt really eat anything in the yard.

the only thing i can think of is the other day he ate one of my slippers, i think he might have swallowed some of it.. but would that make his breath bad for days?
i have been giving him those listerine strips that melt in your mouth (haha he HATES them) and it just masks it a little, but i will try putting listerine in his water all the time, we do that at the dog daycare and it does seem to help.
Heather,

I read an article last night that talked about bad breath and disease. A fruit breath can be indicative of diabetes. An ammonia or urine smell on the breath can be sign of kidney disease. Bad Breath can also be linked to immune disease such as Addison's. It can also indicate thyroid disease (did you ever get Walter's thyroid checked?)

I would try and find out the cause instead of just masking it.

Hopefully it is nothing - but bad breath is one of those things that you should look into further.

Let me know if you want me to send you some of the information.
Kristen
Heather,

Just wondering if you ever found out what was causing Walter's problem?

Does the problem continue? Did it go away on it's own? Medical intervention?

We want to know!

Thanks!
