A few questions- pet publications

For everyone: What online companion animal publications do you read? If you picked your vet/groomer/place where you purchase dog food/supplies from an advertisement- where did you find it?

Chicago people: What print companion animal publications do you read? Do you pay attention to the ads?

Your answers are much appreciated, thanks!

didn't use ads for anything. I don't think I read any online publications either.
I am also a NO to all the above.
Ditto on the no's. I have no interest in pet publications, but I subscribe to Front & Finish and Clean Run and I do at least look at the ads in the latter. There aren't all that many in F&F. But so far only word of mouth from highly experienced dog people will get me to consider a product or service.

I did not read any publications either--don't look at ads. Word of mouth is the way I chose vets and groomers.
No one reads Dog Fancy? You Chicago people don't read Chicagoland Tails?

Very interesting...Do breed clubs put out magazines?

Most breed clubs have some type of monthly or quarterly newsletter.

I have a subscription to Dogs in Review which is mainly a conformation publication.
Ooops, forgot I also now have subscription to Modern Dog. Plus I also get a bunch of trade publications, because the company I work for is officially now making dog products.

Yes, breed clubs put out magazines or at least newsletters. The Wisconsin OES Club does the latter, as does the St Louis OES Club (they do a very nice job). The national club has a nice magazine that comes out four times a year. Some of the regional clubs have more extensive publications: the Seattle OES Club's Raggedy Ramblings, for instance. Very nice.

That's just our breed. Every breed is different.

Let's clarify. Your original question was what ONLINE publications we read.

If you are changing it to what publications, then I too have a subscription to lLean Run, and also Stock Dog and Sport Dog. Of course I also get Old English Times (through OESCA). We do also get the Gazette (AKC magazine) and used to get Family Dog and Dog Fancy (but only because of deals we got - not really read.) I should also get Front and Finish - (Hey kristine want to bring a few copies to St Louis so I can get hooked?)

Most of what I read is online lists and forums.

Sure! And please do me a favor and bring a couple of Stock Dog as well - do you like it?

Heather - for the most part it takes a serious interest in dogs beyond just pets to bring about an obsession for reading about them, which is why you tend to have so many niche magazines (specific breeds and activities; training, showing, trialing, health and nutrition). The general pet owning population tends to have a life outside of dogs and little of it centers on their pets beyond being endlessly fascinated with their inherent cuteness, the huge market in pet products and services, as well as this forum, notwithstanding.

Take note who responded to this thread: with one exception show and/or performance people all.

Who are you trying to reach and why?

I don't know why, but the title Modern Dog just sounds so funny to me...
Yes - I replied as I did because the original question asked what online publications we read.....

I do subscribe to Dog Fancy - it is the only subscription I currently have. I use it mainly in regard to my training classes as my clients are mostly pet geared, not competition geared - for the general breed features, new products and such. I usually take it to work, or at home it is "bathroom reading" .

I get the OET as well.

I do occasionally read other (dog) magazines, but not on a regular basis. Currently I am more into reading books (dog); most are training and behavior related.
My mistake, please include any non local print publications you read as well!

I'm going to be advertising a service for pet owners in the next year, and I'm looking to target individuals that consider their pets a part of their family. Hopefully I can tell you all about it very soon!

Certainly - only have two issue so far - its a new subscription, I think one is due soon. Its okay - the one I love is Sport Dog - more than clean run actually.

Heather - I also do read Bark when I find it laying around - it sounds more like your niche.

Please don't keep me in suspense esp since I live near you!
I read Dog Tails hard copy and emailed version. I did call a pet motel in someone's house once and really liked her. I've kept it in my file until we need it.
My groomer has ads in the local coupon saver mailings/emails.
