Coughing diagnosis

Tiggy started coughing yesterday. It was a real barking cough and occasionally she hacked up a bit of white frothy foam.
I thought she had kennel cough and rang our vet freaking out because she had a cough back in Dec and she's vaccinated for kennel cough. :(

After some questions, in particular about the fact that my dalmo didnt catch it last time and was Tiggy inclined to chew/eat things other than food the diagnosis is.......the silly sheepie has irritated her own oesophagus by chewing on a small tin foil pie plate. Luckily DH had owned up to leaving it on the coffee table and not noticing that madam was having a good chomp until it was in multiple small pieces on the carpet (and no doubt in her stomach) Back in Dec she spent ages chewing a stick at the park.

So now we just have to monitor her in case it turns into an upper respiratory infection and I was advised to keep her quiet as she coughs when she runs or gets excited due to breathing faster. With Tiggy that is easy to say but darn near impossible to manage.

I didnt know that eating scratchy things could give a dog a laryngitis but my vet said he's seen 2 other dogs in the last 6 weeks with the same thing so there you go, learnt something new! Just wish I could have learnt it by reading about it instead of experiencing it.

The dog being vaccinated means nothing....

The vaccine is ineffective much of the time so I wouldn't rule it out if your dog has been exposed to many other dogs....
I know the vaccine's not 100% effective, the vets decided its not kennel cough based on the fact that she's not unwell and she's not infectious. Its so contagious that he believes my other dog would have caught it, if it was kennel cough. We still have to monitor though. And also she only coughed for 3 days and apparently it takes longer than that for the cough to subside if its kennel cough.
Mmmm seems I left out quite a few of the salient facts in my first post.

Yup, it's true, the vaccine is pretty useless. That said, pretty much the same thing as you described, Mim, happened to a friend's rescue dog about a month or so ago. I was convinced she had kennel cough, my friend was convinced she had something stuck in her throat or that something had scratched her throat. I can't remember what she ate, but it was something prickly and unpleasant. I even checked and darned if I could find anything but her vet did a couple days later and she started improving very quickly.

I think this one may merit Tiggy a personal invitation to GA (Goats Anononymous) of which Sybil is the current sitting president, but apparently due to be replaced by younger and more innovative grazing sheepdogs...

Hope she feels better soon.

Oh great, Tiggy's already a paid up and and active member of poop eaters anon, poop rollers anon and chase anything that runs anon.
All these membership fees are going to send me broke.

She's coughing heaps less already. :D

Like your friend Kristine, I did wonder about the pie plate but it was such a barking cough I did my usual catastrophising and went with kennel cough. Why go with a mere scratched throat if you can have an infectious disease.  [/quote]

Aw--- hope she is on the mend!
When will DH learn  Not to leave temptation around with a live wire sheepie girl  . You know Mim DH does not stand for Dear Husband anymore :P (Richard Cranium is more like it now 8) )

Hey you did not mention tiggy and the Foxie Loxie capper 8) Just got in the car today from friday and something foxie is in the air in the car. :P

Bedding is in the wash now 8O

Sounds like she just irritated her throat with the foil, might be interesting in the next few days, the poo might sparkle

Mine no signs at all so blame the DH and we know what that means NOW "Richard Cranium"
Ah yes too worried about kennel cough, forgot all about foxie loxie caper.
Will post in antics for anyone who wants to know why Lisa has had to wash the bedding in the back of her car.
