Violet has a hemotoma

My poor Violet had to go to the Vet's today. Yesterday I noticed that the flap of her ear on her blue eyed side (she's walleyed) was swollen and felt like there was fluid in it. So this morning when I checked her it felt like it had gotten bigger...so called the Vet and off we went.

The Vet said she has a hemotoma in her ear flap. He said there are many causes. The solutions are two, surgery or just let it work itself out. We have time to think about the surgery. The surgery would be more cosmetic then anything. He said when the ear goes down the worse senario is it may look like a "cauliflower" ear. He also said that with her shaggy hair it may not be noticeable. So we have time to make a decision. I am leaning toward leaving it alone. She's not in pain and I really don't want to put her through surgery if I can avoid it.

On the upside, everyone was excited to see a Sheepdog. Someone said "you don't see many of them around." :) The mailman even stopped my hubby to ask about her. The Vet also said that her skin and all is in very good shape. Which made me feel good. So Violet got alot of love and attention at the Vets.

Poor Violet, I'm glad its not bothering her!
I would consider leaving it too, as she has no pain now and will have pain if she has surgery.
Would it be worth trying an alternative remedy? Arnica comes in drops and creams and is meant to help get rid of bruising and hematomas faster.
I dont know what it would cost but if its cheap then you dont have much to lose even if it doesnt work and its meant to have no negative side effects. Maybe you could ask at your health food store.
I've never had one of my pets have one, but one friend's mini schnauzer and another friend's cat have been troubled with the pesky ear hematomas. Both ended up needing surgery - and both more than once.... :(

I would check into the arnica as well. I used the cream form for a nasty quadriceps tear years ago - it helped immensely.

Hugs to Violet! X0X0
Paige used to get them all the time. They are very difficult to fix surgically. If it will go down without surgery, go for it! Our vet used all the standard surgical procedures and a few I suggested........ Drove us nuts! Yes, she did tend to have a cauliflower ear afterwards but like sheepdog, Great Pyrs have hairy ears too. You'd only notice when you rubbed the ear.
oh poor violet hope she feels better soon
The dog we owned prior to getting Duncan had floppy ears and had surgeries in both ears to take care of hematomas. The surgery wasn't that bad and never had a problem after that.

The one thing we did do as a result of this experience was become fanatical about keeping this dog's ears clean. He was prone to yeast infections.

Because we learned from this, I bet Duncan has some of the cleanest ears in Texas! 8)
Dawn, what type of store would I find Arnica? Thank you Dawn/Mims for your advise. The swelling seems to be going down alot today...and she seems happier. :)

Thank all of you for your concern. :D
Aw-- Poor Violet. Hope she is feeling better soon, and can avoid surgery!

I got mine at a health food store. It was a chain store and in our mall - called GNC.
Poor Violet...My lab had one years ago He had an ear infection and apparently got it from shaking his head We were given the same options as you but surgery only if it did not resolve or got very hard and hot. Jacks resolved on its own and his ear looks fine You would never know. I hope hers does the same
Update: Violet's hemotoma seems to be getting smaller, TG. She is her usual clownish self today. I'm just keeping an eye on it and hoping for the best.

Thank you everyone for your concern and your experiences. I would never have guessed it to be a hemotoma.:)
Good news :D
That's good news. :D
Good news Helen keeping :crossed: it goes away without surgery.

Give Violet a hug from us all here :ghug: [/i]
