A few weeks ago, My Berner, Dudley started acting weird...shaking constantly, acting really afraid of everything and he fell getting up from sleeping once and yelped and started walking hunched. I though oh boy, he we go, the slow decline of the Berner Boy. This went on for a few day, I made an appointment for blood test and an exam, when the vet was examining his belly, Dudley was visibly uncomfortable. The results came back that his liver enzymes were very high, cause for concern with the vet.

I scheduled an appointment for x-rays, which showed lots of air in his belly, and an area of concern on his liver, and confirmation that he has HD in both hips.. his left being worse than the right, which I have always suspected. Next step was an ultrasound which was scheduled for today.

Last night on our walk, Mr. Berner Man pooped out a nice green childs sock. Last night for the first time in 3 weeks he didn't shake at all and stretched out in his normal sleeping position.

I sent him for his ultra sound anyways today just to ease my mind about the shadow on his liver.. When I walked into the vets this morning with the "sock" in a zip lock bag.. all the vet could say was "Frigging Berner"

We did the ultra sound.. no mass on his liver, everything looked fine. He is thinking that the elevated enzymes are age related, so has suggested Dudley be put on Witch Hazel and Glucosamine for the hips until we need to manage the pain.

So lets recap.

Blood Test $495.00
X-rays $350.00
Ultrasound $335.00
Sock.. free, from the park.
One kiss from this Handsome face..........priceless

I'm glad Dudley is better. I'm even gladder you didn't post a picture of the sock!
I love that picture! What a cutie!
Glad he is okay, I would have been terrified.
Dudley can do no wrong..he's perfect. hearts
aww, Dudley don't scare your mom like that anymore!!
aww duds...youd think that youd learn what you should and shouldnt eat....sigh....give that friggin berner a kiss from me Very Happy
stinking sock. Shocked
Yikes! Glad he was okay in the end. Smile
AWWW Dudley that face/expression is priceless. hearts

So glad he is OK, what a rotten time for you all. Witch Hazel? That's interesting is it given orally? What does it do and how does it help?

I use witch Hazel to wipe ear flaps. Wink

Syd just passed 2 top knot ties last night and some black cord from a toy this morning, I hope he does not read this forum to get any ideas from the duds as to what is lying around is fair game to be swallowed. Twisted Evil

I panicked till it all passed. Rolling Eyes Your berner must be a stealth scrounger of things lying around to swallow Confused Poor you and so glad duds is feeling better and back to his berner self. Very Happy
Scary... so glad he is ok....

Wow your vet is expensive!!! Shocked
That vet is really expensive. We just had 2 view xrays done a few weeks ago, and they cost $76. Your's were $350!! Wow..... Cool

I am glad the culprit sock came out.....your poor boy has the darnedest luck! Sad
Dudley is back to his normal self, well as normal as a laid back lazy Berner can be.

I always feel so inadaquate as a Mother when something like this happens with Dudley. Our house is so VOID of all dog toys or stuffies becuase of his fetish with ingesting things. Nothing is every left out, dish clothes, tea towels, etc. The only thing I can think of is that he picked it up at the park, as that is the only place where he goes off leash. No more, I see an extend-a-leash in his future.

Lisa, I meant to say Milk Thistle for his liver, he is taking 500 mg daily.

And I agree, the vet practice I use is expensive, but the level of service is outstanding, thank dog Murphy is a healthy boy. That sock was my New York trip.... oh well there is always next year.
Happy to hear your beautiful Dudster is ok Laughing
