venting can't believe a vet would say this.

An add on Kijiji was advertising for a black standard poodle or OES to breed with this person's Airdale Terrier. Her vet told her that her 3 year old terrier would settle down if she had a litter of puppies. So this was her solution.

I had to write to her explaining that the vet was wrong! get your dog fixed. don't add to the over population of unwanted dogs and go to petfinder.com and see all the dogs at kill shelters that are the result of people like her with good intentions.

I can't believe a vet would suggest such a stupid thing.

Just had to vent. This is less damaging than hitting my head on the table in disbelief.

Assuming she is telling the truth, you don't know what she asked the vet that led him/her to say it. Could she had said - is it possible that having a litter of puppies may calm her down? If all she wanted to hear was yes, she would not listen to his advice any more than she most likely will yours.

But yes - hitting your head on the desk, not a good idea.

Did the vet also suggest that only breeding her to other breeds to produce designer puppies would have this effect?

Come to think of it, I don't know that terriers ever settle down. Or even if they are supposed to.

I'm not so sure her vet actually gave her this advice. Maybe she just felt like she needed an excuse so she pulled out an old wive's tale. The bigger issue in breeding a bitch who has behavioral issues in an effort to settle her down is why would you want to risk producing more of same? 8O

As for producing Old English Sheairedales <?> I know one now neutered Airedale (maybe that explains why she needs an OES or poodle? ) who once upon a time thought that would have been a grand idea and who is still in love with my OES despite his inability to do anything about it. He was flirting with her in class the other night. He'd come up, drop his ball in front of her (tennis, since that's the only one he has left  ), and while she was busy sniffing the "gift" he was busy sniffing her bum. I thought that was pretty ingenious on his part

I do have a soft spot for the breed. Not enough so that I think it would be a good cross. Yegads and horrors. 8O

Kristine
I doubt a vet would say this... she's probably full of crap.
We were watching Animal Planets Dogs 101 and they had the Airedale on. Todd says "I've always liked them" 8O
I'm thinking "where did that come from?" As if Maggie, the coondog version of Sybil, isn't enough???? Yikes!
