Here we go again, still, whatever!

Some of you may remember when I posted about Truman having a problem with peeing in his crate while were gone for the day. We had him thoroughly checked out with the vet, urine tested, cultured, whipped, stirred and shaken! Well, it's still happening. We are now in the process of investigating behavorial issues. We have contacted an animal behavorist. She requested the blood work done (a blood chemistry analysis) and a video tape of Truman in his crate and a daily log of activity. We have YET to catch him on tape and he's done it 3x in the past 10 days! Always after the tape has run out. Sigh.......

He never, ever does this when we are home with him and he usually doesn't sleep in his crate any longer at night and never has a problem then, either. Just when he is in his crate during the day while we are at work. I have a couple of ideas as to why this is happening. One is that he is bored (even though I put treats in a Kong and sometimes leave the TV on for him). My other theory is he has separation anxiety. I'll mention my ideas to the behaviorist to see if I am even in the ballpark.

I guess I'll keep taping him until he's caught in the act, so to speak. I sure hope we can get to the bottom of this. The animal behavorist is supposed to be good. She's a consultant to the Sedgwick County Zoo and gives lots of lectures and talks around the country. Here's her website:
http://www.emilyweiss.com/private.html which is interesting. Keep your fingers crossed that we won't need too many sessions! Her consultation fee is $200!!! YIKES!

I know what you're going through Deskwench. Dancer did that too, peeing in her crate only during the day only when I was at work. When I shaved her down at 7 months old it stopped and all our housetraining woes came to an end. My guess is without all the fur to soak it up she quickly discovered she did not like her own pee on her skin.
Just this past week Sky has been peeing in her cage. Every single day. She also seemed to do it just before I came home from work. I took her to the vet as well to be on the safe side, even though I was positive she was fine, and sure enough, no infection or abnormalities. So, I thought, and thought. I realized that this week my daughter has been coming home earlier than me. The dogs are used to me getting home from work around 4 pm every day. I immediately take them out to pee and play and stretch. My daughter has been getting home almost an hour before me, and even though she took the dogs out, it wasn't the first thing she did. First she hung up her coat, then she took her backback up to her room, being a 14 year old girl, probably made a phone call, and then let the dogs out. I think that like pavlov's dogs, my girls are now in the habit of needing to pee EXACTLY when they hear someone come home, and Sky just couldn't hold it since she is an excited puppy when we come home, so she peed in her cage waiting for Ashley to let them out. Yesterday I asked Ashley not to come in the house until I got home, just to test my theory. Well, at first I thought I was wrong, because Sky peed in her cage yesterday anyway. Today I asked Ashley to wait across the street so the dogs couldn't even hear her in the porch or anything. Today, Sky did not pee in her cage. I came in, immediately let her out, she peed, and got a marrowbone. She seemed as happy as me. Dancer is older, and can handle a slight change in routine I guess, Sky just wasn't ready for it. LOL
Willowsprite - Do you have any kind of rug or blanket or anything in your crates? I wonder if I took Truman's rug out if he would not pee since there would be nothing to soak it up. He seems to do his thing in the morning after we've both left for work and before I come home at lunch time. He holds it all afternoon and doesn't even pee first thing when my husband gets home and lets him out into the back yard. If I thought he wouldn't do anythng in the house while we were gone, I'd leave him out of his crate. Most of our house has carpet that's only 6 months old but I could enclose him in the rec room and kitchen since it has ceramic tile. I wonder.....
My girls are in their crates when no one is home, it's just safer that way for them and the house. They aren't really chewers, but you never know. The girls do have a clean blanket in their crate everyday. I use old baby flannel blankets. I would try taking it out of his cage though for a bit and see if it makes a difference.
I think I'll try that. I'm also determined to get a video of him "in the act" to give to the behaviorist. I'm really hoping she can give us some constructive advice (for $200 she should give him a bath and haircut too!) hahaha
