Thinking of Adopting

Hello,

We have a beautiful boy, Algy, Bearded Collie aged two and a half. We now think it is time to get him a sister an Old English Sheepdog and we are considering rather than going down the puppy route, now we are more experienced, we were thinking of adopting.

Algy is a nervous boy, scared of traffic and horses, loves people, he is a people dog and is curious about dogs and some have become his best friends, like Angel who is his girlfriend, and then there are others he does not care for, usually these are the dogs that are like whippets, as they are just so manic they unnerve him.

So we potentially are looking for a young female, who is calm, steady, good with people and dogs, traffic and horses, great on the lead as we take them everywhere with us - so her calmness will translate to Algy and help him overcome his fears.

Really just want to understand the potential problems of adopting, I am sure there are risks, what can we do to ensure we adopt the right dog to fit into our family?

A bit about us, I am Dee and I run my own lifestyle management business from home, in a village near Pangbourne in Berkshire, UK so Algy is always with me. Nick my partner is a Director for AXA Insurance and he works in London. The house is large with a big garden that is totally secure with lots of toys and teddies.

Algy has been well trained, he knows sit, down, wait, off, leave, round the back, come here, where's daddy, where’s mummy, outside, on your bed...many more words, he is bright, Nick calls him his sudouku boy his vocabulary is large we have great conversations. He will not come upstairs unless he is invited (although the other day when I got home I did find him on our bed!) cheeky monkey.

His only challenges is that he barks when he meets people and dogs on a walk, nervous excitement and he jumps up sometime at them. Otherwise he is our beautiful boy and we love him (not spoil him) to bits.

Thank you I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards Dee

Hi.

You will probably want an Old English that has gotten past the puppy stage (not sure if the actually do grow up?)

From relatively short experience these dogs can be a bit mad - very happy, excited, very loving, boisterous - would this intimidate your beardie?

Archie likes the Beardies in my town, I think there are around 10 here, only one was grumpy and snappy towards my boy, and that itself was a rescue that was in a very sorry state and she hadn't be socialised at all with other dogs or people. She has improved immensely

You may wish to expose Algy to a few Old English if you can get the chance to see what he makes of them.

From Archies interaction with Beardies I'd imagine they'd probably get on like a house on fire.

Good luck
We just adopted 2 OES. 1 boy and 1 girl. We had 1 girl at home. Best thing we ever did. We live in the USA east coast. They came by air from the west cost. 3000 miles. AND did great.
I have no doubt that this would work for you too.
They are clowns!!!! we love them so much and fit right in.

I wish you well anf please lets us know wwhen you get one, pics please!!!!
Thank you to you both, we will try to find an OE to intrduce Algy too...we will let you know what we decide.

If we do go down the adopting route whom should we contact in the UK?
Hope one of these can help.

G harwood is the most well known.
