He's afraid to go outside!

Our new dog, Duncan, is afraid to go in the backyard with us! Everytime we take him out, he runs for the door! We haven't had him 24 hours, but he is such a timid guy that I'm afraid that he will develop some real fears. Yesterday, when we got him home the next door neighbor's dogs (a collie mix and a lab mix) barked at him through the fence. He doesn't want to be out there anymore. We have a normal, suburban backyard with a patio et. al.

I'm going to try him on his leash and see if that helps.

I would go easy are putting him out. He is scard of him new home. He needs time. Do you know anything of his backround? Something has made him timid. Small steps are best. Just out for potty is enough for now.

We know quite a bit about his background. He was rescued in Missouri from a horrendous puppy mill where he was one of the studs. I found an article about this puppy mill, and I can't possibly communicate what a horror show he must have lived through.

He was placed in a home in Missouri and immediately returned because he lifted his leg on a piece of furniture. He was transported to Texas around mid-March and lived with his foster father and mother until we adopted him yesterday.

We are certainly taking things slow with him, but we were hoping he would want to come outdoors with us. I just don't want what I hope to be a temporary fear as he adjusts turn into a full-blown phobia.
Give him time. Our first 2 rescues were from awful backrounds. Kassidie had been beaten and did not trust anyone. It took a long time to turn her around but my husband did. We got her at 4 yrs old. She lived till she was 12. Cinde was found frozen to the ground and has been tied to a tree for 3 yrs, It took her a very short time to love and trust us. She was 3 1/3 and we had to put her down last summer at age 9 from cancer. Talk slow,
don't yell. One day is to short to have him adjust. But be firm.
Take treats with you when you go out. Duncan goes out, gets a treat. Walks into the yard with you gets a treat. Then go back inside. You don't want to push it to the point he is very uncomfortable.

Repeat that every hour or so, this weekend. Gradually cut back to every two hours and work on staying out a bit longer.

Your biggest goal right now is to get him to trust you and be comfortable around you. He is trying to figure out how to fit in. Very overwhelming for the poor guy.

You might try going out leaving the door open and sitting on a step or at your patio table or walking around the yard and wait for him to venture out. He will eventually go out and get into a routine. His previous routine was no routine so he will have to settle in and acclimate to your family and life.
Also, try not to spend too much time reassuring him. That reinforces the idea that there is something to be worried about. Just be completely neutral and he should get the message that everything is ok. Treats and praise are good if you can do it in a way like you do for anything else he does that is good. Don't make an extra show because he is doing something scary.

Good luck with your sweet boy.
I'm not sure how much Duncan weighs but if he's a puppy you might try carrying him around the yard a few times. It would be best if the other dogs were inside the first few times.
If he's older and heavier maybe take him somewhere privat & quiet, without other dogs at first for nice quiet walks and play time with just the family.
A couple of more suggestions.

Take him outside on a leash.
Take him out front instead of out back.
Borrow a friendly dog for a week. Let the other dog train Duncan.
Send Duncan to me for a couple of months - though he might "forget" how to get home. Ben and the girls will train him.
