Trouble with dog area

Hello'
I have a male 7 month old and a 1yr old female. I brush them atleast 3 or 4 times a week. We live in a wet area. Snow in the winter, and rain in the spring. My yard (which is grass) turns to mud eventually. My dogs as you probable know get muddy. Anyway, I send them to the groomer once a month. Today my female had to be cut very short because of mats. I'm heart broken for her. She has no hair, or very little. The groomer assures me that she will grow it back in 2 or 3 months. So Im not suppost to worry.
Anyway. Are there any ideas for what I might make a dog run with??? I love my dogs and want them to have access to the whole yard. about 1/2 acre. But I can not deal with the mud and have them get matted. Is there a good ground cover for a dog run?? I heard a sandy mixure is good, but it can smell over time. Same with concrete. And concrete can not be good for the dogs. I could really use some advise. Yes and I know and knew that have OES dogs requires alot of time and grooming.

Thanks

Tim
