Hip Problems?

Hi Everyone! My husband and I are beginning to get quite concerned with our Harley girl. She is 2 1/2 and as of the past month, has had increasingly worse problems standing up. Once she is up, there is no signs of pain or difficulty, running as fast as ever with full gait. We originally thought it was because of sleeping in a goof position; however, now it is every time she stand up from sitting or laying down. Any ideas on what this could be, causes, solutions to help??

Could be Hip Dysplasia, only way to find out is to have a vet X-ray her hips. Also maybe a tendon strain again she needs to be gone over by a vet to find out if any soreness.

If she is like this at the moment till you find out what the problem is then dont have her charging around as you could be causing more problems down the track.
Thank you! We plan on taking her to the vet this week, but was just curious if anyone has gone through this....
Is it possible prior to this she strained a muscle? or got injured any other way, like another large dog crashing into her when playing?
It is possible, our Oliver loves to shove her around the house with his butt. And they do wrestle a lot in the yard. We are going to take her in to the vet and hopefully they just tell us it is a pulled muscle or a strain, and nothing serious. Is there anything in particular I should have them check? I would hate to go in and have them not check out all possibilities.
Thanks for the suggestions. My husband brought Harley to the vet and had x-rays completed. The vet said her back, hips and legs (everything he could see in the x-ray) were impeccable and in perfect condition. He did notice that there was a 2-3 cm difference with her back leg muscle mass (left leg having less). He gave her some anti-inflammatory for a week, in hopes that that would help. Its been a week, and she is still having difficulty standing up....any suggestions?

Did you restrict her activities during the week she was taking her meds? You
sometimes need to keep them quiet for a week or more so a pull or strain
can mend. Then ease them back into normal activity levels.

Once Harley is standing I would hightly recommend hydrotherapy. It did wonders for our Oliver. It evened out the muscle mass in the hind legs and gave him more endurance. We finally reached a point where we were "wasting our money" according to the vet so we stopped and now just take him long walks every night. Watch the direction Harley turns, I'm betting he favors one direction over other. When you are playing with him encourage him to rotate in both directions that will help with equaling out the muscle mass as well.
Well..the battle continues. Our vet basically recommended us to a neurologist to continue testing, etc. Some friends of our recommended that we try some glucosamine for joint/cartilage health (you can buy it from trader joe's). Has anyone had luck with this? I like the suggestion of hydrotherapy and googled some places around here. It just breaks my heart to see her trying to stand up. Some days are definitely better than others; however, when its a bad day it just breaks my heart to see her not be able to jump up with enthusiasm.

Number one, complete rest while on Anti-inflams that is if you have one confining her to a crate, if not a quiet area in the house, outside under lead controll to potty etc and just complete rest.

Having a 2-3cm difference in her back legs, suggests she has had this problem for awhile, weight bearing on one and hence shrinkage on the other side.

Hope they can find the problem, so maybe seeing a specialist if there is no improvement is the way to go. Anti-inflams do help but sometimes just relieve a little and only mask the problem.

Keep us posted to what they think is the problem.

Keeping you all in our thoughts.

It is good to have them on it anyway as it does help the joints but it has to be Glucosamine with Chondroiton in it as well, wont hurt her at all but wont preform miracles either but does help support cartilage and joints in the longer term.

What Lisa says is true and if you can find it with MSM that is even better. I start my dogs on it as they start to age just as a routine. My vet recommends doing so & is the one who mentioned the MSM ingredient to me. He said the horse people were giving it rave reviews.
I hope you get some improvement. We use the glucosamine and chondroitin and also MSM. Right now the MSM is separate, but there are versions with all 3 together too.
Any luck with the hydrotherapy? It does work wonders with building muscle in a low impact way.
Well, per our vet's request, since there hasn't been any improvement, and on her own she has been taking it easy, I just scheduled an appointment to visit a neurologist. I would like to try to figure out what is going before possibly further injuring her, etc.

The Glucosamine that we found does Chondroiton, but I'll have to check about the MSM.

Her appointment with the neurologist is on the 17th, so I'll keep you guys posted. Until then, any suggestions would be greatly appreicated. Has anyone else dealt with something similar?
