Barking........Grrrrrrr

Ok well i have a 2 year old sheepdog. He has an issue: whenever i am on the computer he barks nonstop. He also scratches at his food container but when i give him more food he just barks a scrathes some more. does anyone know why he is doing this?

another problem he has is that he violently tears up his bed. i have to then sew it back together and he just tears it up again. sometimes he even eats the stuffing. he also likes to shred towels. Can you help me with my dysfunctional OES
I don't know the reasons why, but I can sympathize with the barking...it is so annoying!

We put Oliver in time out. In a room or a crate, just away from us so he can understand that when he acts like that he gets no attention at all. But, you have to remember that when he is displaying the acceptable behavior to lavish him with praise. Good luck, and again, I totally understand!
thank you i will try this
He has trained you well!

The barking at you while you are at the computer is because you are giving the computer attention and not him. What happens when he starts to bark? Do you turn and pet him, or tell him no? Even scolding him gives him the attention that he wants. Best thing to do is ignore him completely. No petting, talking, eye contact, etc. Even if he sits there & barks for hours, put the ear plugs in and ignore him. It may take days, weeks or months but he should settle down eventually.

Same goes with the food. He scratches at the food container and you give him more food, so why should he stop? :D So when he scratches don't give him any food.

The shredding the bed thing is most likely because he is bored or has anxiety issues. When is he doing this? After you leave the house? How much exercise is he getting each day?
Perhaps the keyboard makes a noise he doesn't like? Have you noticed that it is when you're typing (or printing?) or doing anything in particular, or is it just staring at the monitor? What does he see on the monitor from his angle?

Can you try a quieter keyboard, or put a rubber pad or a towel underneath your current keyboard, or both?

(Don't put a thick rubber pad or a towel under a laptop, a laptop needs to breathe!)

Maybe position yourself so he can't see you staring down the monitor?

Just a thought or two.
When the barking doesn't work when I am at the computer Archie simply positions himself between me and the keyboard and monitor - quite difficult to ignore!

15 minutes of Archie speedway and no you can't have my ball! outside in the garden is enought to allow me to continue (normally!)
Ah, barking is extremely annoying and when my sheepie barks, it kills me. He barks when he is trying to herd the dogs in the park, so that barking is more out of frustration because the other dogs are not acting like sheep.

It seems that your dog barks at you for attention and boredom. I agree with VerveUp about your puppy training you and that even negative attention is attention and honestly, that's all they want from us. We can easily train them bark at us longer by trying to ignore them and then giving in before they give up.

When you want them to stop barking by ignoring them, they will bark at you more and longer then quit. It's called the extension burst, the exact same thing we do when the TV remote's battery is dying and we keep pressing the button to change the channel. Finally we get up to change the battery. ;)

See, if your dog doesn't like to be sprayed with water or put coins in a can and shake it every time he barks at you. As soon as he stops barking, praise him. Have you tried giving him a Kong while you are working at the computer? Give him a job to do. There are so many options, you just need to figure out what works with your dog.

Good luck!
Ignoring worked for us in other areas of behavior - OES crave attention so they learn this way quickly. We also used Kongs - awesome!!!

You don't. ;) I started herding with him thinking that would help but it didn't. He is very good at herding sheep because the sheep listen but he still tries to herd dogs, who don't listen. :?
we have that type of thing going on now too...bailey will bark and herd grover from the bedrooms down the stairs to the patio door - EVERY morning - which wakes up our kids...not such a good thing. so we've started letting them out one at a time through the house and that helps. But poor Grover, isn't even done with his business outside and Bailey starts barking and trying to herd him back inside....meanwhile when we play ball in the backyard....Grover barks and herds Bailey when she has the ball...but Bailey doesn't do it back to Grover. We don't have sheep...but I do agree that after playing and wearing off some energy, the not-so-good barking and attention seeking becomes a little less.

Bally does this when he's having a tantrum because I want to sleep at 5 am rather than play  He's just a morning kind of dog, so I usually chuck him outside early with plenty of toys and nothing he can destroy.

I've just learnt to keep all of his favourite things to destroy well away from him now :D wish I had better advice than that!
Tiggy's a barker too 8O
We've owned 2 dalmatians and they hardly bark at all so its come as a bit of a shock to our ears. The dalmatian's not a fan either.
Tiggy barks to herd. Tiggy tries to herd anything that runs. Dalmatians run A LOT, everywhere, including away from barking Tiggy.
We are working on using distraction. Ha, ever tried to distract a sheepie who is intent on herding?? She doesnt herd a thing I say.
If anyone has a more successful method my dalmatian would love you to let me know.
