Otis is a sick boy, but getting better

Our foster boy Otis was in Friday for a vet visit.

He has a long, documented history of peeing, marking, poor bladder control issues. I had a pee band on him here, and he rarely got the pad wet. He did pee often, and in small amounts. Well, I was at work Thursday, and Todd was home. Otis peed on the porch in the afternoon. Todd was apalled - in his words the urine was "fluorescent, with chunks and foam". I called our vet Friday morning, and got him in (amazing, as this is heartworm clinic time, and they are booked solid).

After getting our speciman, we got some results. Poor Otis has a urinary tract infection, elevated urine pH, and elevated bilirubin. So, then he got a blood draw (needed his HW test done anyway) and the bilirubin was sky-high - 100 times the normal level. 8O . So then after a complete profile, xrays for stones we don't know a lot more. He is HW negative - good deal.

He was negative for crystals and stones.
And the xrays show he has no hip issues. What myself and LeAnne thought was a bad back end when he was moving was no doubt how he was guarding himself d/t the UTI pain. Explains why he was cringing when the other dogs wanted to play too.

After being on ABX since Friday, he already is acting a LOT spunkier and bouncy. He initiates play as well with the other dogs. He and Chewie just were out and had a ball in the dog yard - when before he just hunched up and didn't hardly run.

He has a recheck blood draw Thursday, hoping the bilirubin was just a freak thing from the UTI and stress. :crossed: If not, he gets more testing. :(

Poor kid :( . The high bilirubin count would scare me, hopefully it comes way down.
Were his other LFT's normal?
Poor sweetie :(

Yes they were - thankfully.
Sounds excruciating. I am so glad you are taking care of him. I've never heard of bilirubin. What does it mean?
Poor baby hope it clears up soon with no further problems and all levels are back to normal.

Otis is one lucky baby being fostered with you and todd & I am sure you will get this special boy right. :ghug:

So glad the man is acting spunkier now so the treatment must be working/helping and he is having fun with chewie too.

Sniff Sniff brings happy tears to my eyes to hear of him progressing and now wanting to play etc. He must be feeling so way much better now.

bilirubin is the product of dead RBC's. It is complex, involving the liver and bile. That is why LFT's (liver function tests) not being elevated is a good thing for Otis.

One common way most people know about elevated bili counts is with newborn human babies. As the fetal circulation is replaced by the baby's own circulation, the old RBC's die and result in high bili counts - and the babies are most often treated under lights in an incubator type device. This speeds the flushing of the dead cells.
Poor Otis  Hope he's feeling lots better and all his tests come back looking good. :crossed:
Poor guy. :( Glad he is on the mend.
Yowsa - sounds terribly painful. :x I'm glad he's perking up already. Hope he's healed completely very soon. Hugs to Otis!
Poor kid. A UTI is miserable.
Oh, poor Otis for the pain he had for who knows how long!

So glad he's responding to the meds. Big hugs for a complete recovery and all negative blood work! :ghug:
Poor boy :( Hope he feels better soon.
Ouch! Hope he's all better really quickly!
Glad you figured it out and hope Otis is all better real soon.
Otis is definitely feeling better. I really hope we get improved lab work, because he is a lot bouncier and much more animated. The ABX are helping. :D
So glad he is doing better. Poor guy. He is so lucky to have you taking care of him! :D
UTI's are painful. Glad that is figured out. Now he can fun and play and get into trouble
