Cleaning, Cooking and Antidotes. Let's share tips!!

I'm getting ready to start spring cleaning today, and thought it might be fun to share tips to make the processes easier. AND while we are at it--how about cooking tips and fun antidotes :D I know-- I'm weird, but I love to hear ideas and tips from others!

I'll start....

1)Cooking --
Did you know when two eggs are cracked together, only one will break?
Speaking of eggs, (Easter is close:) ) adding a tsp. of water per egg to your omelett mixture will make the end result fluffy and moist.

2)Cleaning--
Coffee filters make wonderful "dust rags" and it seems to cut down on dusting. They also make the outside of your fridge, dishwasher, etc shine when you use them to wipe down the front.

3)Words to live by---
Remember--Memories are pictures that develop in your heart. Develop those pictures often, and cherish each one.

Great idea!!

Cooking:
One thing I have learned is use a thermometer.
Remove BEFORE it is done, it will continue to cook.

Cleaning:
I am just about done with Spring Cleaning.
But, I did have the guts this year to rid us of clutter. I had 15 fell bags
of clothes to give to the needy. More bags of shoes, bags etc. My closets are neat.
my rule is from now on (if you have not worn it in a year it goes)
Same for Food. I went through and could not believe the boxes that had expired.

Don't sweat the small stuff, if you don.t you will not be able to face something big. Life is to short.
I should know- some years ago my heart stopped. If not for my hubby and his CPR I would not be here now.
TO HIM I SAY (THANK YOU BABE)

LEARN CPR IF YOU CAN... You never know who you save!!!!
washing wood floors....mix a bucket full of hot water and 1 cup of windex...wood floors will shine. no streaks and will be squeeky clean..literally!

dont forget to vacuum upholstery...a lot of dust collect there too!
Good timing. Even though we have a winter advisory for tomorrow, I guess I've officially started spring cleaning today since I'm actually poking threw closets, which I hate doing.

I have no tips to share. I leave the domestic godess gig to others. But I do have a question:

My vaccuum cleaner has developed this weird problem. Even though it gets a good workout, it's less than a year old and to my thinking it shouldn't be this inefficient.

In essence what happens is that when I turn it on this demented gray and white cloud of fluff attaches to the end of it. It's worse if I'm using the hose. It has become incredibly noisy and I can't get the hose where I need it to go because this big fluffy thing is constantly attached to the end and it won't fit under things like the refrigerator.

I thought perhaps it was a special attachment I'd never seen before. The hose fits nicely in the noisy end, so I presumed that meant it should be picking up from the other opening, but when I get this peculiar attachment to sweep its other opening across the floor there is no suction whatsoever on that end (the noisy end is good at picking up dropped kibble, bread crumbs, that kind of thing -- you don't even have to attach it to the vaccuum), but the other end has no darn suction. To the contrary, it emits air on occasion. Foul smelling air.

Do y'all think it's plugged?

Kristine
COOKING: Double up on ALL herbs and spices.

CLEANING: Add a couple of teaspoons of pure essential pine or lavender oil to your favourite detergent (I'm talking Stardrops or Flash here in the UK) you will be AMAZED at how that removes all dirt, especially grease, ideal on cookers and floors.

WISE WORDS: Make a list at the beginning of the day, do the first thing, then cross EVERYTHING else off and put your feet up.
Kristine, the problem is likely in your filter. If you pick up damp dog food or damp hair it can clog the filter part of your vacuum. I have an upright and in the bottom of the compartment where the bag goes is a pad that goes down to the actual motor, sucky part. If that gets full or clogged the dust will come out wherever it can causing a cloud.
Kristine,

I have the same problem only that "thingy" you are talking about makes wierd noises :)

Mandy, I clean/change filters on the main part of the vacuum religiously. Honest! (have to with the amount of dust bunnies I have  )

Perhaps the special attachment has its own filter? If so, do you know where it is and how to change it? And do you happen to know where the detach mechanism is?

I think it's a Daphne 1400 model. It fits on the regular wand as seen below:

I have to get this straightened out! It's taking me forever to vacuum.

And, like I said, in addition to the poor suction, it's impossible to squeeze the thing behind furniture, under the refrigerator etc.  :P

Thanks!
Kristine
Kristine, I have had the same problem in the past. I found detaching the thingy on the end really difficult but here is the trick.. you need the correct detaching tools. A large piece of cheese or chicken is best, wave it around in front of the black protruding part and it will become magnetic with the said tool. At this point you throw the said tool outside, the thingy will follow. Close the door real quick before it gets back in, and your vacuum should work fine again. Best of luck!
I can't find the box or model number but the daphne 1400 looks just like the one I have 8O

It works!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

I think the attachment came with a manual, but the manual somehow got shredded by the attachment. Thanks to you, I discovered that tossing a round, bouncy thing out the door will also quickly cause the attachment to detach. In that case you don't even need to run it by the black part of the attachment, but rather just make a pronounced sweep of your arm as you release it out the door and voila!!

As an added bonus, the various hair-covered speed bumps strewn throughout the target vacuum area are also quickly relocated.

Cassie, you're a genius.

I nominate you for a Domestic Diva award :roses:

With much gratitude,
Kristine
my special attachment gets the vacuum out of the closet all by it self!!!

the whallops and crashes it causes makes me go running only to find the attachment attacking the vacumm.

unfortunatley if i want the vacuum to work at maximum efficiecy with out the loud noise i have to close the specail attachment in another room behind a closed door.

zoe and einy ( the special attachment)
Hire a housekeeper , then take the black and white part of the vac outside and relax
I agree with Jean. From a guys point of view, much easier.

Cleaning- hire a housekeeper.
Cooking- employ a personal chef
Word to live by- Dream your life, live your dreams and dig yourself

Now if I could just find that maid and chef today I would not have to do laundry, grocery shop, groom Obe, clean the house, shovel the snow off the decks and stairs, cook breakfast, lunch and dinner...the list goes on.

Have a great day spring cleaning to all. I will be there with you.

Darc--- THANKS for the tip about the wood floor cleaner! Mine are clean and shiney! Never heard this one before....:)
Phew for a moment there I thought I had to go look for the poor Sybil Icon in vain again. I think Daphne can fend for herself.

I am into vinegar for cleaning this year. after a rough asthma winter I decided to try no tot use a lot of household cleaners. Micro fiber towels and vinegar and water clean almost everything we need to do. A little dish soap and water is great on Newfie drool - gosh that stuff flies.

I am doing the big things - windows and curtains make the whole house look cleaner and brighter. And little things, clean wood work makes the house look well cared for.

Now picking up the toys, magazines and shoes that I need to work on...
Vinegar is great for cleaning, but it doesn't kill bacteria/fungus. Maybe add a little tea tree oil (from the health food store) for its antiseptic properties. Vinegar is also great to add the rinse cycle of your laundry to neutralize any odors (I always add vinegar when I'm washing my barn clothes).
ah yes, I do still believe in the power of bleach for when I need to clean yucky stuff. Vinegar is for windows, mirrors wiping down the ridge exterior etc etc (geesh this cleaning stuff never ends)

good reminder about the tea tree oil I do use that too
I'm afraid my black and white attachments disappear when the vacuums are brought forth. Anything loud noise and they are gone. The big white attachment has no fear and actually is designed to remain in place, on carpet or tile, when cleaning forcing a detour. This attachment does have a very hand feature, every so often she decides to help clean the house. Merry Maid Glacier model x-special will clean kitchen base cabinets, refrigerator doors and the floor with the special wide model tongue.

Heard from a friend but haven't tested: to clean shower doors of soap scum, spray with Pam kitchen spray, let sit and wipe clean. I have shower curtain so can't test, waiting for other testers.

Two eggs smashed together.......watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie, it's an Easter custom....usually one does survive.

Speaking of Easter and eggs, I just did up a batch for home shut-in visits this week. (yes, I used the Rit dye to get the super red color). I had ZERO cracking while cooking. I used organic, free range, vegetarian chickens ( guess they don't eat bugs) brown eggs (since I was dyeing dark red. Set the eggs out the night before, tempered them in warm water before cooking......and minimal cooking. Simmered a few minutes, turned off heat and let sit at least 10 minutes. (Dye was in the cooking water). Removed them one by one, plopped in bowl with salad oil, set out to dry. When dry (but still hot) rubbed them with an oil soaked wad of paper towels to finish shining. Cool in frig. They turned out lovely.

Ahah, now here is a REAL domestic diva!! There's only one thing you forgot, if said housekeeper arrives early in the day take the vacuum attachment outside and relax with a coffee and sweet snack. If however the housekeeper arrives later in the day then skip the coffee and move straight onto a nice glass of your favorite wine.
But be warned the vac attachment sometimes works all by itself without the vac 8O . This is most likely to occur when there are odours or crumbs from the sweet snack. :roses: :roses:

Shon, with your outlook on life, would you like marry my daughter
My tips, huh?

Cooking, do it in such a way that it is theraputic and soothes your soul.

Cleaning, gotta have a housekeeper...I DON'T DO HOUSEKEEPING. PERIOD.

Words to live by, live the best, most honest, loving life you can. Forgive people who wrong you, don't carry it around...it will only weight you down.
Spring Cleaning???

I'm still trying to finish 1998 Spring Cleaning!
Well- it is done. Windows, curtains, baseboards, lights, floors, upholstrey vacumed... you name it, it's clean. :D

I have a cleaning lady, but, I like to do this kind of stuff myself, so I know it is done from stem to stern. Believe it or not, I find it relaxing. I put on some 70's rock, and dust away!

The only thing left to clean is Max.... now that job, NOT so relaxing. 8)

Use newspaper as a paper towel substitute - no streaks, no lint, and leaves a good shine on the windows. Also, the Swiffer hand-duster is the best invention known to mankind since the cordless phone.

My black and white vacuum attachment is always down the hall up on a bed barking at the Eureka - I usually let her outside to enjoy the less stressful noise-free environment while vacuuming.

"May all your dogs be sheepdogs or sheepdog wannabees"
Vinager is great for soap scum in the bathroom. Tips. Turn off computer and t.v. half hour before hubbies e.t.a. Turn on oven even if nothing in it. He says it would be nice to come home one night and find the oven is hotter than the t.v. or comp!!  Second tip... When he gets home from work, NEVER be sitting in the same place you were when he left. Third tip...When he asks why you are so happy when cooking that rump steak and humming to yourself and you tell him cooking for the ones you love makes you extremely happy, to avoid disappointment....make sure he knows your refering to your dogs!
