hello

hello all, just joined but I am looking for info allready, I have over the years owned 2 bearded collies (both had been dressed) and they died of old age, the past few years we have missed the dog but thought we would not get another, at christmas through a friend of a friend we were asked if we would like an old english bitch aged approx 31/2 years as the present owner had arthritis and could not give her the exercise she required, hence the new addition to our familay of "Ella". Ella has come into season can someone point me in the direction of information so I can read up

cheers
andy

welcome. what kind of information are you looking for?
Hi Andy,

Welcome to the community!

As Kerry said, what's on your mind? :D
well she has started bleeding, we have been trying to keep an eye on her and a pair of boxer shorts, is there anything we can do for her or is it just to let nature take its course, how long does it last and what else can I expect, never had a dog go into season before,
Well the obvious is not to let her out alone -doggie chaperone duty for you for the next few weeks.

the three weeks after she starts to show signs of a heat are when she will be receptive to mating (after she stops spotting). she will also be emitting pheremones to attract male dogs so again, no outside alone (and of course away from any intact males at home). the boxers are a good idea - some people use little girls panties and if she is clipped down you can use special doggie season wear.

I find having my female crated at night also helps contain the mess. I wash her rear more often as well - a quick doggie bidet in the tub
A complete season will last around 2-3 weeks. Bleeding will stop slightly in the middle of the cycle when she is most fertile, start again and then taper off. Each bitch is different. Just keep the boys away from her. If you have her outside, keep an eye on her because some dogs will climb fences, etc. to breed and she will be more than willing.
hi
thanks for the info, we have been keeping an eye on her and if anything she has become slightly aggressive towards other dogs
A dog will go to extremes to mate with a bitch in heat and I guess the bitch will do everything in her power to help make it happen. I've seen video examples of bitches backing up to chain link fences and the sire on the other side...

After this is all done, a spay might be a good idea! :D

that does sometimes happen when they first go into heat. it will pass. My girl is the same age about. its nice they actually have brains now :)
Welcome to you and Ella, sending G'days.

Getting cranky can be normal I call it Hormones from Hell in the sheepie girls

Any dog sniffing her butt will make her put her guard up.

Cycle is usually 21 days, heavier bleed at the start and the thingy swells in size, then changes to a straw coloured discharge at that crucial time with her thingy going softer but still enlarged. Towards the end they can go back to more bleeding as everything starts to settle down.

Giving her beard and between her legs a wash once a week to freshen up that area while she is in.

Any more questions on it do ask and keep her well contained too and no peeing out in the street while in or you will have every dog in the Neighbourhood knowing and probably arrriving out the front of your house hoping :plead:
