I'm not sure I understand what you are asking.

Are you looking to place a sheepdog with a rescue organization?
If so, here is the List of Old English Sheepdog Rescue Organizations
What does a person have to do to qualify to be part of the rescue organization? Are the people screened and regularly checked on?
good question. I suspect the answer is no - I mean don't you occassionally hear about hoarding cases where people consider themselves rescues?

I suspect that isn't the case with the OESCA listed rescues - its a small community and everyone seems to know everyone else.
Most rescues, not all, are certified 501(c)3 organizations. If you are referring to checking on the rescues that we place, then yes, we do periodically check on them. I am in contact with the adopters of all fosters I have had through OES Rescue of the Southeast. All adopters are fully screened through a member of the rescue, this usually includes a home visit as well as vet reference checks.
funny - I read it as questioning whether the rescues are regularlly screened and checked up on. which has nothing to do with their financial and tax status.
You may be right, that may be what they were asking. I was thinking they were asking more about the potential new owners. I realize that financial and non profit status has nothing to do with the welfare of the sheepies.
I was screened to foster and be a member of the rescues I am with. Personel references and a vet reference and a home check was done Before I could foster and vol . There have been some bad people representing rescue and have sold dogs or worse. The rescues (including the OES rescue I vol for) all know me and we tend to get to know other folks in rescue all over the USA and sometimes in other countries. Does that help answer your question??
Yes, the volunteers for TOESR are screened before being allowed to foster, transport, pull from shelters, etc. I don't know for sure about all the rescues listed, but I feel pretty confident there is a fetting process of some sort. Good question, though! :)
Tammy - do you think the question is about the volunteers, or is it can just anyone call themselves a rescue? Is there an overarching RESCUE Czar that approves any organization being called a rescue?

Several of us who have our own rescues started out working for a larger OES rescue. We were eventually encouraged to start groups within our own state or region and were mentored by knowledgeable individuals. So, both the rescue directors and our foster and transport volunteers are thoroughly screened.

In addition to working via phone and e-mail with our mentors, many of us are members of OESCA or are involved in social and competitive events where we meet face to face. Most everyone involved in OES rescue know each other, whether personally or by reputation. If you don't feel comfortable with a person in the closest rescue, contact the next closest rescue and ask their opinion of that rescue. Or, contact the vet the rescue uses. You could even ask for references from people who have had their dog placed through the group or have adopted from them.

You've probably already done the best thing to find out whether a rescue is legitimate by asking here. :-)
Good answer Nita. :D

No, Kerry, to the best of my knowledge, there is no rescue czar, per se. I thought the question was about volunteers, but you're right, they could've been inquiring as to how the groups themselves are legitimized. I think Nita addressed it perfectly in that case. :P
I took the original poster to mean that they are looking for a nice, reputable person to take their dog (that they got from voluntarily rescuing it).

So do I :D
