Ear Plugs

Recently we've been puppy sitting Bally's best friend, Louis (one of my Mum's ever expanding brood) a mostly blind Briard (seen here when Bally was littler)

He and Bally had a bath yesterday and while I was doing an ear check I realised that his have huge, waxy matts in them 8O

I've never had to deal with that one before, so can someone please please tell me how on earth to get rid of them? They're in such a difficult spot to fiddle with!

Any advice is definitely going to be appreciated by me and Louis

I just pluck them out with hemostats....
I agree just fiddle with them until you can free some hair, I had an oes in this week that had this and in a terrible state but with a little bit of pulling they came free.
:( OK I'll try! They just seemed to be very firmly in place, so I wasn't sure if just pulling them out was going to hurt him and do nothing.

Thanks for the help!
Use some ear powder so you can get a better grip. You might even try using an ear wash first to get the goop out so you can see a little better before pulling.
Do an ear wash first to get as much of the wax clumps out then an ear powder to pull the hair from the ears using your fingers.

That way it wont hurt him at all.

Might take a few goes with the ear wash/cleaner first to loosen up the wax clumps before trying to pluck the ears using a powder.

If really bad then he might need to go to the vets, be sedated and for a vet to clear it all out.

You dont want it to be painfull for him so if the wax does not break up and come away easily then I suggest let a vet do it then try yourself.

Epi-Otic is a good ear wash sold at most vets and good quality pet stores. Bio groom has an ear powder so does Aristopet sold at leading pet shops too.

Best wishes with it all and you need to teach your mum about ear care with her learning to clean and pluck them so it does not build up again.
Thanks Lisa, you're incredibly helpful as always :D
That happened once with Sammi, Very suprised We layed her on the couch David plucked and I petted and held her there, she was very good and seemed happy that we were doing it. After that we just got to her earlier. Our Blue is not has hairy as her and I can pull and few every nite and he is good to go.
Just forgot to say too, if the waxy discharge is black or pongy then dont try to clean the ears yourself get a vet to do it under sedation as it could be anything from mites, canker or even an infection so will be extremely painfull for him if you try to clean the ears out yourself.
