Archie Puppy to Adult food change

Reading the Nutro post Iwas going to reply but thought it'd be better as a seperate topic.

With anything that is made on mass in batches because some people suffer doen't mean that all will, it could be down to a bad batch of food that won't reach every where at the same time.

What surprised me with regard to the Nutro linked stories most was the ignorance of some of the owners, they suspected a problem with the food but continued to use it (not sure if this is hindsight on their part?) if your dog doesn't like something and refuses trust them, I believe they have a greater sense of smell than us?

I currently am transitioning Archie from Puppy to Adult food, and have switch brands due to availabilty in my area, going from purina pro plan to James Wellbeloved.

It started well, mixing a little in of the new with the old, eventually changing completely to the new, these were in 2kg bags at first He has now taken a dislike to the Turkey and Rice (15kg)bag), I queried this and it at the moment appears to be the most popular seller at our pet shop, and they haven't had anyone report any problems.

But I am not going to ignore the fact he simply does not like it (why who knows?) he wasn't over keen on the Lamb and Rice (large kibble 2kg bag) either but the White Fish and Rice (large Kibble 2kg) he seems not to get enough of. Phew

I wonder if his fish preference is from his snaffling the cats food?

I was very worried at messing about switching foods so quickly especially when he took issue with the Turkey and Rice, but he has not appeared to have upset his tummy, infact the latter stools are better than ever.

I have switched to James Wellbeloved because it is locally made so theoretically my pup is reducing his carbon footprint  and it is cited as being hypo allergenic, so I thought it should be a worthy successor to the purina.

I am going to stick with the 2kg bags for now, as I don't want to risk being left with a part eaten 15 kg bag, okay so it costs a little more but until he is happy and on a solid regime then I think it's a case of small steps foodwise.

I'm partial to fish based dog food because I'm Norwegian, I guess, and somehow think this must be a good thing. And, trust me, I've never snaffled the cat's food ;-)

Some of the fish based ones have a strong smell, I've noticed. You either love it or...not so much. My dogs eat anything that can't outrun them so don't seem to care, but some dogs just plain have preferences (or so I've been told) and have strong opinions as to whether or not they'll eat something, even if it's perfectly good food. A friend's rescue changes perferences periodically and refuses to eat certain things. Yet when she stays with me she eats what my dogs eat and quickly. Probably because she learned if she doesn't, someone will be happy to gobble it up for her.

The small bags sounds like good strategy.

The girls are on that too... They love james wellbeloved Fish and Rice
Time for an update

Archie has settled into his new food, although he occasionally leaves a bowl most of the day, then will eat it an hour or so before his second bowl is due then eat that straight away - I am not concerned it is just hime being "Archie"

Due to my wifes insistance that she thought he was bored on one type of food day after day (I gave in it was easiest! )

The James Well Beloved food - Archie has 200g of the small kibble Turkey and rice in the morning (yes the stuff he was turning his nose up at before!) and 300g of the large kibble Duck&Rice or Lamb&Rice or Fish&Rice in the evening.

He seems happy with this (and his additional treats during the day for being a good boy) he has good firm stools but the occasional loose stool with over exercise.

The result of the switch is a lot less excessive flakey wax in his coat, so that seems to have worked out.
