Food and #2

Just looking for some advice...

Gus used to eat Fromm's (I can't remember the kind exactly, it was the black and gold bag though!) and I think it was just a little too rich for him because he could clear a room with his gas, and his #2 was just a little too soft and runny sometimes (the more he ran around the dog park, the worse it'd get- we started taking an extra water bottle just to squirt off his butt!)

We switched him to Eukanuba Large Breed Lamb & Rice (which we were told by Mounds is still high quality, but less rich than Fromms) and he's been WAY less stinky, although I've been noticing lately that his #2's are smaller and harder. Maybe this is actually the right amount/consistency, but I'm starting to get paranoid that he's not going enough!

Gus hasn't gotten to run around as much lately because it's been so wet and muddy, so I'm sure that's a part of what's going on. He does go #2 regularly (morning and evening) and we give him yogurt and I gave him a little pumpkin too, which didn't make much difference. I don't think this is an issue like a blockage or anything because eat still eats like a horse and goes to the bathroom on a normal schedule and he is definitely not lethargic although I think he's sick of being inside.

Any thoughts? Maybe he isn't getting enough food since the Eukanuba isn't as high of quality? Maybe his #2 was wrong to begin with and this is normal?

Sounds just right... I love Eukanuba, haven't met a dog yet who had digestive issues that weren't cleared up on Eukanuba....
It sounds like his body is utilizing more of the nutrients in the Eukanuba, and it is taking longer to go through his system, which is all good. This is exactly what you want. If you are concerned that he's not getting enough food, just monitor his weight, and how his body feels around his ribs. If he's getting too thin, add a bit more to each feeding until you find a balance.

I did want to mention that Oscar did not do well on Eukanuba. It was one of the first food switches we did for his tummy, and he would start chewing himself all over about a half hour after eating it. Much later on, when we tried a different Eukanuba formula, we had the same result.

I am glad that it is working for Gus.

Sounds like the Iams is a lower residue food than what you used first. The amount of residue is one factor for selecting a dog food brand. Usually the better ones are more nutrient dense and contain less fill.

While that may sound ideal for the poop-pickup duty, for some dogs, like people, need the extra "bulk" to keep things moving along.

Each dog is different. You need to watch how the food is tolerated for: gas, poop, weight, energy, allergies, etc.

Remember when switching over food, do so gradually to lessen more stomach upset. Apparently you are on Iams now and doing well.
