Mutt Strut - Length of Walk

I wasn't really sure where to post this, but this looked like a good fit. I've signed McCartney and I up to walk in the annual fundraising event for the Humane Society of Indianapolis. The day the track goes to the dogs! You get to bring your dogs, and walk around the 2 1/2 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedyway track. My question is, how far is too far for a walk for a pup? Usually, McCartney and I just take 30 - 40 (max) minutes walks at a time. The event isn't until April 26, so he'll be exactly 5 months old. So I think he'll be fine, but just wanted to open it up to anyone else who might have some insight.

I will probably walk him in the grass as much as possible, because their paws get cut up by the track, especially if it is hot. Lots of dogs were wheeled away last year because of this.

If anyone has any suggestions, or ideas on if this is a perfectly fine length to walk, or if it is too much for him, just let me know. I would think by 5 months, he'd be fine with it.

Of course, if you want to check out McCartney donation page, you can see it here: http://hsims.convio.net/site/TR/MuttStrut/General?px=1009481&pg=personal&fr_id=1040! Wish us luck!

probably depends on his true lineage. I wouldn't think most sheepies are up to a 2.5 mi walk at 5 months.
You can always do a shorter walk.

And what about the snow/rain shoes for the track. they will be a pain to put on, and I would definitely have him practice with them before the walk.
Just how far should a OES puppy be walking? I did not realize this should be an issue. I did not find this site until mine was about 8 months or so. We took our OES on long walks all the time2-3 miles. Even a couple of 5 mile trails. Could this lead to potential problems as she gets older that we should now be watching for. We had been told that what ever she was able to do.
i guess it depends a lot on the rate you normally walk, too...
.. when i'm not "in shape" for walking, i can do 3 miles in an hour, so a 40 minute walk would be 2 miles.

Really I think at 5 months I wouldn't push the pup past a mile... but I'm awfully paranoid about that sort of thing too :)
Can anyone tell me the reason not too or the potential problems for walking a younger pup. We walked at a leisure pace and our pup did absolutely fine. We carried water and took breaks. I am just trying to find out if this could cause problems that can show up in the future.
what kind of pup guest? OES and other large breed puppies can suffer longterm joint issues from excessive exercise while young. It isn't something you would notice at the time.
