What do the different barks mean?

Our girl...now four months old 8O is starting with different barks. She keeps coming out with new sounds. She's got a howl, a deep bark (danger), a startled yip, a woof woof.

The howl really threw us for a loop. What is she trying to say? :? We just can't figure out where that one comes from? lol.

Not sure what they mean, but Jenny has different barks also, she is 8 months old. The first time she did the real deep woof, we all looked at each other and said "what was that". Jenny can bark deep one minute if she hears something and then the next minute is doing the "puppy" bark, and then there is the "give me water" bark and the "get me out right this minute bark or there will be a puddle".
My first thought with the howl is some sort of frustration - but can't say mine have ever done that.

Our favorites are little tiny excited yips out of my 115 lb male (it makes any man withing 50 feet come up to me and ask if that came out of "that dog?") and Marley's crazy excited "ferocious" stay away from me you big mean dog". when they want to go out -they whine - just like kids
Tiggy has those fun little yips too! She does them when she's sitting and trying not to wiggle while I put her lead on. She knows if she doesnt sit no lead and no walk but its sooooo exciting that its hard to keep still so she wiggles and does funny little high pitched yip sounds.
DH calls her monkey girl when she does it.
Gabe does this pig squeal, when we first heard it we had no idea what it was :D
Baxter has one bark that sounds like a 'seal' when he is excited or wanting to steal something from Baley! It has amused us that their barks are so different--haven't heard them howl though.
Two of my adult dogs have barks which come from the ends of their tails. Really scary. If you want to know what they were barking about you have to crawl under the bed to ask them.. The pup scared himself so much when he barked the other night, he wet himself. He didn't realise it was him that was making the noise. Which makes me ask another question!! Why are oes dogs such wusses??
At our house, the howl means that the either the tea kettle is done or Suzi's been left alone.
And of course, the biggest, meanest bark comes out of the smallest dog!
Obe is like the rest with different barks for different things. Some I have figured out, others I just look at him and say what??? All I know is they are loud!
Why not keep a note pad and write down the bark and when it happens.

We have worked out most of Archies, the loudest is "Get off the computer, I am bored play with me" normally within an inch of my ear!

his - ruh ruh ruh, is I need to go investigate!

His fast loud succesion of barks is INTRUDER - be that one of our cats or next door going to their shed!

The door bell is met with row - row - row with him dashing in the direction of the front door to say hi come on in and play with me! TV shows with the same door bell sound trigger him the same, but other door bells he ignores

Dh asked me what I was laughing so hard at.(wipe tears from eyes). That has got to be the funniest thing I have read for a long time!!!
When I read Maxmm's reply about Suzi's howl, I had to share my story about her uncle Petey. I took Petey with me to visit my sister, who lives in a retirement community, and left him at her place alone while I took her to the doctor. Her next door neighbor told me that the chinese couple that live above my sister had called the guard's desk while we were gone when they heard Petey howling (apparently for quite some time) because they thought it was her dog and they were concerned that maybe her husband, who has a really bad heart condition, was in distress or had actually died and was home by himself.

When the guard showed up at her door and told her of the neighbor's cocern, she told him that it was one of my sheepdogs visiting and that her husband was Ok. The chinese people came down shortly after the guard had told them that everything was Ok and appologized for calling the guards to check on him, but they told her that to the chinese, when a dog howls it means someone is dieing or has died. Needless to say, we don't leave Petey alone any more while he is visiting my sister's place.

I also own Suzi's mother, Sarah, and her grandmother, Elizabeth, and neither of them has ever howled or seem to care when we have left them alone for a little while I take my sister to the doctor. They all love to go there for a visit because it is constant petting and attention from everyone we see and their aunt always has Frosty Paws in the freezer for them.
One of our most FAQ about having a deaf dog is "Do they bark?". I always reply that they are deaf, but not mute!

Oscar has different barks to communicate different things, just like any hearing dog. The difference is, his barks are ALL LOUD. :) There's no such thing as modulation for him.

He also howls, and it sounds something like Chewbacca from Star Wars. This occurs mostly in the morning, when I've acknowledged that I am getting out of bed to feed him. He stretches, and "does the wookie". :)

Well when moon ray barks then ya ya ya he doesn't like what Im doing like when i sit on the computer he will bark ya ya ya bark and repeat several time un til he gets a toyand brings it to me. Or he will growl and bark when he want me to get him something. Constant barking i just think he is trying to try my pateints and let him out. whimmper and bark he want out. So i gues with time u will figure it out or just look at them and say what and stare and watch then laugh some times he will just walk away and lay down. Now when he sees hi friends out side he will arf woof and whin and pace back and forth to the window and door then to me and repeat if i don't let him go out and play. LOL worst then a kid begging for candy.
