Can a dog eat a whole peanut, shell and all?

I ask this because when I buy the peanuts with the shells on, I like to eat the whole thing, shell and all. It really seems to gross people out but I like the shell. It chews up fine for me and digests ok. Is there any reason why I shouldn't let the dogs have one now and then? I already gave one to Clyde and he seems to have suffered no ill effects but Clyde can eat anything.

I would think it would be OK.
Just a little extra fiber. :D
I like the whole peanut too, shell and all and it also grossed people out. Why?
my dogs do - I have a macaw - they are messy and the dogs never fail to check the floor around the cage looking for lost peanuts. now when they try to eat other hard shelled nuts I freak!!

I don't know. I don't get it. It's really just like any other crunchy snack, I think. I don't know why it grosses people out. I can think of a lot of other foods that people eat that I think are WAY grosser, lol!

I like how you test it out on Clyde AND THEN ask if it is okay!
I just want to be someone on the list of those who thinks it's gross to eat the shell of a peanut. Never even heard of someone doing it. When I accidentally get a little shell in my mouth, I freak and start spitting. ;)
My husband eats the shell too... I think he is NUTS! What is it with that?
I couldn't eat the shell if I tried. I'm like Jo... little shell in mouth = spit, gag, spit, drink.
yeah, im a shell eater too...actually i think i like it better than the peanut...ive been also known to eat the shell and give the nut to brian at baseball games...lol.....

clyde should be fine :)
Getting a little shell is different than eating the whole thing. That bothers me too. But the whole shell...it's almost like the nut inside pops when you crack through the shell and bite into the nut. Of course, now I'm allergic to peanuts so this is all from memory...
When I used to like sunflowers, I ate them shell and all.
I actually think I liked it for the shell. I hate them now - especially just the seeds. Yes, weird....
sunflowers have always creeped me out...

LOL. I guess honestly, I didn't even think of it being a possible problem until James shrieked "EW! Don't feed them the shells!" I thought he had a valid reason but it turns out he was just putting his own grossed-outedness on it.
I would think that the peanut shells are better than the rocks, string, or plastic that I've caught my dogs with. If I see it yes I run my hand down their throat to get it but sometimes its too late...they've already swallowed it.
I've given my babies whole peanuts as a snack...not to overdo it b/c I figure it may cause consipation. Sparingly I think would be OK.

I will remember you as you remembered me.

Fur real! :cow:
For humans, no the shells would not cause constipation, just the opposite. (and not diarrhea...) Wonder what the % fiber is in the shell? Dogs don't chew well. Then again you'll know soon enough how well the shells were digested when you pick up the poop.

Is it just the salt on the shell y'all are craving? I'll send you a salt lick instead.
i must admit to eating shell and all of the orange sugar candy peanuts.

only buy small bags, otherwise a tummy upset can occur.
