How do you teach the TOUCH command?

I read in another thread from Spacegirl about her Sheepdog Laika learning the touch command.

She has Laika touch her hand, but I'd like to train to touch any known noun, similar to the way Mulligan knows to "get" different things. Hmmm, now that I think about this, maybe it's too duplicative of the GET command. Anyway...

Any suggestions on how to teach this behavior? We don't use a clicker. We use tons of praise, but I think there's a law of diminishing returns with that approach now. Treating with food is so hard because he becomes so focused on the treats.

Maybe what I should learn first is to get him a little less interested in the treats? How the heck would you do that? I'll open another thread about this.

you start with your hand and then extend it to otherr objects. the clicker is just a marker, I use the word "yes" as my marker - my clicker timing is off anyway. when he touches your hand say yes! then treat to start.
OMG my dog is brilliant!!!

Just sitting here, I said "TOUCH" and touched the back of my hand to his snout and praised him. Then I moved the hand away and said TOUCH and moved the had towards him about 7 times. Both hands.

Then I held the back of the hand in front of him about two inches away and said touch. He went through a series of behaviors, each time I said "no" softly and repeated "Touch!" then he nudged with the nose and he got the praising of a lifetime. He got it right away and started nudging either hand I put directly in front of him then I started playing with moving the hands to different positions.

He hasn't figured out that he needs to look at my eyes to figure out which hand I want him to touch, and he goes looking for whichever hand on which he himself is concentrating... maybe I ought to concentrate on one hand first? I'm torn on the next step to get him to recognize that I want him to find which hand is turned away from him and then touch it. But this is FUN FUN FUN with such a smart dog.

PS I show him the back of my hand, because the palm means stay. I hope! :D
he can differentiate between stay and tousch I think. I would start on one hand. ANdI wouldn't repeat the command, or say no - just hold out the haand and wait till he gets it. I think.
We do it too.
Touch is a fun game. Make sure he touches one hand and you treat with the other.
You can alternate the touch hand, as long as you treat from the opposite one. We do close, far, high, low and all over. They love it! :D

Or use something for him to touch. I taught Tiggy to touch a cutsie kids wand from the $2 shop. But a wooden spoon works as well.
Ha i just read this! yah!!!! Once it clicks that is it! I stopped teaching her to turn of the lights though, my walls are getting scratched. I have enough scratches from the cats jumping up on to ledges.
